Rear 914 Disk Brakes on a 412 ?
I am considering installing 914 rear disk brakes on my 1974 412 Estate. Has anyone done this? Pix? Horror Stories?

hm?
i guess that a 914 would probably be the closest to a type 4 in brake parts
i mean the rear drums and front discs are pretty much type 3 stuff
i
and as far as i can tell
they run linear in year
71' only kinda thing
my 71 411 i think has early/late type 3 discs and calipers
wich means off of a late car but NOT 72-74
but i think it would depend on the year of yours as well
have you looked at a 914 rear end?
is it the same?
ooo...
look what i found
God i love pelican parts

Re: Rear 914 Disk Brakes on a 412 ?
They are not any harder or easier than others...and they are good calipers....but othere than that they have a lot of drawbacks (a) they are hard to find (b) rebuild kits are hard to find (c) if they have a lot of miles on them, the seals in the handbrake lever need to be rebuilt and the kits do not have those parts (d) they are small and have small pads.
The nice thing about them is that they are compact and are twin piston. But there are plenty of nice sliding caliper designs out there that are easier to find. Ray

Re: Rear 914 Disk Brakes on a 412 ?
thats deff something i was thinking
they do Look Small
really tho
what parts are different
if its just hubs and such
for a Non daily driver it would be kinda cool to have a 4 disc car
but with mine its alot of type 3
so easy to find
are there any Disc conversions that people have used before on our cars???
ray??

Re: Rear 914 Disk Brakes on a 412 ?
I'm playing around with a bit right now. Since the late type 3 uses the same brake drum, cylinder and backing plate...it also should have a very similar outer bearing cover...even though it is a difefrent part # to use a different bearing inside, its clamping thickness should be identical to type 3 because it uses the same backing plate sandwiched in between it and the trailing arm casting.
So....you should be able to use the caliper bracket from any type 3 kit. Although the type 3 uses a totally different rear stub axle...since the drum and backing plate are identical and have the same spacing to each other....it would stand to reason that any type 3 kit...you could use the calipers, brackets and rotors.....so long as you had the center machined out of the rotor to fit the type 4 stub. I am thinking it might also need about 7-10mm turned off of the edge of the type 4 rear stub. If it fit and did not compromise the strength of the rotor doing this...it would probably put the wheels about 5-7mm farther out to the outside. That can be dealt with.
Or...it would probably be simpler to use a type 3 kit rear caliper and bracket...and look around to find a rotor that matches up. A saab 900 rear rotor looks promising.
I have not heard great results on too many type 3 kits. The ones with the sintered iron brackets..."should" be the strongest...but have heard teh csting fit is terrible.
The CB performance aluminum brackets....are made from a strong alloy...and shoul be decent for rear brakes if they are machiend well. They also look to be a well gussetted design.
The type 4 rear brake part numbers are as follows.
Bearing cover: 411-501-311
Backing plate Left: 311-609-439D
Backing plate right: 311-609-440D
Backing plate left self adjusting M-86 Sweden: 311-609-425E
Backing plate right self adjusting M-86 Sweden: 311-609-426E
Drum: 311-501-615F
Wheel cylinder: 311-611-067C
