SPLI T OR NOT ?

I TOOK THE ADVISE OF SEVERAL REPLIES ON SHOULD I ATTEMPT TO DO A REBUILD MYSELF. AS I STATED I AM A COMPLETE NOVICE AT AUTO MECHANICS. ALL THE REPLIES SAID YES GO FOR IT USING THE MANUELS I HAVE FOR GUIDANCE.

WELL I TOOK THIER ADVISE AND STARTED THE JOB, SO FAR IT HASN'T BEEN TO BAD. MY QUESTION TODAY IS SHOULD I ATTEMPT TO SPLIT THE CASE TO REPLACE THE CRANKSHAFT AND CAM??

HOW DIFFICULT IS IT?? THEY ARE COMPLETE WHEN YOU BUY THEM SO IS IT A MATTER OF JUST PUTTING THEM IN PLACE?? WHAT ELSE IS INVOLVED WHEN YOU SPLIT OPEN THE CASE??

PRIOR TO MY REBUILD PROCESS, THE CAR WAS RUNNING THE ONLY PROBLEM WAS OIL LEAK AND A LITTLE SMOKE. I JUST WANTED TO REBUILD THE ENGINE SO IT WOULD BE LIKE NEW AGAIN. I'M GOING TO GIVE THE CAR TO MY SON AND I DIDN'T WANT HIM TO HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE ENGINE.

SO BACK TO MY QUESTION, SPLIT OR NOT OR JUST DO THE PISTON, RINGS VALVES, ETC. ???

SPLI T OR NOT ?

My dad had a motor built and only took it to 1641 because it was for a dune buggy and he didn't want too much power. My dad has been working on cars all his life and probably could have made it a two day job in the garage but he still took it to somebody else just to make sure it would be exactly right. I personally woudl have done it myself just for the learning experience but if I get stuck I just call dad. If you decide to do it yourself I'd get somebody aht knows a little something to come help and guide you even though a bug motor is about as complicated as a weed eater.

I've never torn down a weed eater motor, but I have rebuilt 3 VW engines. It's true that they are not that complicated, but there are some key things that need to be correct when reassembly takes place. The best thing you can do is do it yourself if you posess any mechanical skill. Buy a Bentley manual from your local VW Dealer, read it carefully and go for it!

SPLI T OR NOT ?

dude,do it all.get a book(i used a haynes).it's easiest for the do-it-yourselfer to take the case and crank(unless you plan on replacing it anyway) to a shop for inspection and replace the cam drive, dist drive, and all the other little wear bits.they make these gears in several sizes to compensate for wear but i didnt even bother.new cranks dont usually come with gears but everybody sells a kit with all the gears ,spacers, etc.if you have ANY mechanical aptitude then you can do this.i did mine on a workbench in a couple of days.btw, you DO know that all caps=shouting?...bartman
