Vaseline lowers oil temperature

I used two metal lids from the plastic Vaseline jars. Hammered the threads out and with effort forced them over the heater outlets on the fan shroud. They went on so tight that the heater hoses fits like normal.

Mica

Great (small) minds......
I did buy some Purity baby food jars. Maybe ours are different, but they did not work. Only problem now is I must drink the "PRUNE" fruit juice.

#1 Yes, that is where the tube that supplies heat starts at. However, the air has not yet been heated at this point, because it has not passed through the heater boxes under the car. The thick hose runs down to the box and that is how you get heat. You cap the openings in the fan shroud during the summer months so you don't lose cooling air into the engine compartment. You want all the air to go over the cylinders when it is hot outside.

#2 the cap from a 20 oz. bottle of Gatorade will fit also.

I think this is too advanced for a newbie like me, but I am a sponge willing to absorb all the info I can get....

Two questions:
1. Is this were the heat duct goes to heat the interior of the car? Why would I want to cap that off? Where does the heat go now?

and

2. I don't think they sell "Vasoline Baby Jelly" in the states. I think Baby food jar lids are too small.

Thanks for the info Jordan...so what you are saying is that when it gets warm in New Jersey, that I should take off my hoses. (That explains whey I have seen other Beetles for sale with those hoses unattached.) Just one other novice question: Where the hose would connect going into the heater box, do I have to cap off that end too, what happens to things at the point?

I don't do anything to the heater box, any air that would come out of the top of it would already be heated, so it would help in cooling, if anything. I do seal off the place where the hose goes through the engine tin, though.
Good Luck,

I have been using "1 7/8 freezeplugs" (any autostore) for years. They push right in and fit tight enough and do not fall out. If I need to pull them back out, I just tap them with some object and, voila, they're out.
Also, you can leave everything connected the way it was meant to be. The paper hoses slip right over the shroud airduct.
I have to admit, you guys are clever with your ideas. Bottom line, if it works who cares.
