1776?

Post by rumblbug »

When I bought my car, the guy said the engine was a 1776. Is there any way I can check this out? Are there any part numbers that I could check? I know that it is at least a 1600cc, and it is dual port. It also has a 34 PICT carb on it, and I don't know if that is what is used on a 1776.

Thanks,

a 1776 has 90.5mm jugs, and they usually pull around 100 horses, which is much more power than a stock 1600, weighing in at (most) a whopping 58 horses. as far as the carb, that is personal preference, but a 34-pict-3 probably doesnt breathe too well on anything bigger that a 1641.

About the only way to tell is to remove either the upper or lower cylinder tin and get a good look at the cylinders. A 1776cc motor uses 90.5mm cylinders, which are 5mm larger in diameter than those used on a 1600cc motor. You'll need to refer to a stock cylinder for comparison, of course. You can also look for less space between the head studs and the outer area of the cylinders.

I like the way that you think Steve. With a 34 pict and no other outwardly visible changes you'd be pretty hard pressed to get 100 horses out of a 1776, (any 1776 without extensive headwork).

A 34PICT-3 carb would be ok on a 1776, as long as the main had been swapped/drilled for something bigger( like 1.35MM). Another way to tell that it is a 1776, the top of the piston will say 90.47, blah, blah, blah.....(somthing of that nature) just pull of a head and check it out!!
