Window/Regulator Removal

Post by RodJ »

I have to replace the window regulator (winder) on my '72 Super.
1. Do I have to completely remove the glass from the door to remove the regulator?

2. If so, how do I get it out of the door?

Sorry - I'm a newbie!

Thanks,

I've never done this on a '72, but removal of the glass should not be necessary. Take the door panel off and undo the bolts that hold the regulator to the glass. Then slide the glass all the way up and secure it with several lengths of duct tape (running from one side of the glass, over the top of the door frame, and to the other side of the glass-- make sure the glass is clean or the tape may not hold).

Hopefully the regulator can then be unbolted from the door and drawn out through the large openings on the inner door skin. Like I said, I've never done this with a '72 so it is equally possible that the regulator has to come out up through the slot in the door.

They go for $27.96 At www.barnesandnoble.com

My copy of Bentley's is rapidly getting that worn look.

But, please show me where in there it covers either the window regulator (winder), or removing the side glass.

I must have missed that page! But, thanks for the reply anyways.

If you want the manual of all manuals, then spring for the official VW service manual. the thick phone book sized ones. They cost about $100 and I'm pretty sure most year models

Hey 74SB,

This is the first I've ever heard of another manual for the Bug. I've got the Bentley book, John Muir's and even the Chiltons (it's only good for outhouse!). I've scoured the internet, book stores, even the book catelogs like Motorbooks and this is the first. Can you tell me anything else about this book, (i.e., proper title, publisher, etc.)? Did it originally come from VW themselves or a subcontractor (like Helm does for Ford and GM?

On the topic of books, I would add...

Also: Haynes, Clymer, and the HPBooks series of special issues like electrical, carburetors, body work, brakes, handling, etc.

The best are:
the 'idiot book' (How to keep your volkswagen alive, a manual of step-by-step procedures for the complete idiot), the Bently manual, and the HPBooks Baja Bugs & buggies.

i wouldn't think the regulator would be hard to remove...i pulled the windows out of the door to tint them on my '74 super...loosened the bolts, pulled the window out the bottom, and then just did the opposite to put it back in...looked like the regulator would have come right out with 2 more bolts
