I just bought a 1972 standard beetle. Its nice and straight, rust free new carborator on what I was told is a 1500cc. I am new at beetles and I have my work cut out for me in asthetic remodeling.
Anyhow. The car stalls as I downshift to stop. It idles great after ignition and drives straight and shifts up excellent. It'll shift down to 3rd and 2nd great. But when I am about to come to a complete stop and when the car is nearly stopped the gen light goes on and sometimes the oil light goes on as the car stalls. Note that this does not happen every time, and sometimes if I downshift to 2nd and then nuetral and give some gas it will not stall at all. It starts immediately and idles fine and the both lights are off, and I drive off just fine. My guess with what little knowledge I am working with is that I am driving the car incorrectly and downshifting improperly....or, there is an adjustment to be made with the new carb (its a solex)..or , God forbid some kind of transmission problem (which I dont think is the case.) Please let me know from your experience what you think. THanks.

Does your car shift hard? If not I would'nt suspect a tranny problem. The lights coming on sounds suspicious though. I would start by checking the carb. If the fuel is sloshing around as your under braking, it may be starving the carbs. But that would'nt explain the lights. You may also want to search for a faulty wire (something grounding out) in the ignition system, or the charging system.
Unless there's a VW guy out there that knows exactly what the problem is, the only thing you can do is starttrouble shooting.

I have a very similar problem, but only when it is cold outside, and only till the engine heats up. However I think the root may lie at the same place for both our bug's.
Look at the front (facing you) of the carb. At the top right is a smallish triangle looking thing Called the vacuum diaphram. As I have gathered, this little device is supposed to keep the engine running as the RPM's drop. If the diaphram is torn or not adjusted properly, the RPM's keep dropping as you slow down till the engine dies. It can be replaced cheaply and is easy to do.
I replaced this on my bug, but before I could really test it my clutch gave out, so when I get that fixed in the next few days I'll let you know how it works. This is a place for you to start anyway

I think I've got it fixed. I did a maintenance tune-up and adjusted the idle and idle air screws some. I didnt really know what to listen for (Muir's book was helping), but the car is driving much better. Not stalling unless I mess up the shifting. Thanks to those who helped.
