What is the right engine lid for my \'72?
My '72 has an engine lid with four vents. They are set "two and two", with a gap of about four inches in between the middle ones. I havn't seen another one like this, all that I see from 1972 up have four vents spaced evenly across the top. And from '68 to '71 they only had two vents, so that isn't what I have. What gives?

I'm not too versed on the newer less attractive bugs but, I do believe you have the correct lid. There were many changes with the VW almost monthly through production and your year includes the first unofficial year of the 1600cc dual port engine. The lid needed more louvers to accommodate the larger fan and better dog house cooling system. It wasn't till later in 72 the design changed once again for more air in better, more efficient locations.

The late '70 and all '71 had the pair of vents, and in '72 they went to the 4 sets of vents all the way across, you are right. You have one of 2 things: Either a '68-70 convertable decklid, which may not be so, since I haven't seen too many to be sure. Or, and this is what it probably is, a replacement decklid made more recently in either Mexico or Brazil. They dont look the same as the late year decklids.

1971 was the first official year of the 1600. 72 was the second.

Hey Joe Blow, they may not be as attractive as an early oval or something (beauty is in the eye of the beholder). But you have to admit, they are a better car, four link, 12 volt, dual port and all.
I have seen the Brazilian and Mexico lids and they look the same as a stock 72 with the vents all the way across. The light is different along with the holes for it.
I'm thinking a Convertible.

Maybe a past owner had the lid modified?

Joe Blow -- Please watch the name calling, and check your facts. The '71 had a DUAL PORT 1600 (1585cc) engine type AE. Manufacture started in August of 1970.

1600cc DUAL PORT engines first year was 1971. So you are welcome for the correction. Smarty Pants? What do you expect? There was no reason to throw that little quip in your original post about later bugs being less atractive.

Hey MARTINSR, don't let that Civic owner push you around. Anyway, I am 90% sure you have the right lid, and even if it's not, if you like it, use it.
