It's still up in the air if I'm gonna rebuild my engine soon, it appears strong but I want some ideas to start going on what are some cheap mods that will produce more hp or gelp my bug porform beeter? by the way it's a 1969 bug with a dual port 1600 in it. thanks

Ported heads, better carburation, and an extractor exhaust are some good places to start. That way if you do decide to up the displacement later on you've already got the good carbs and heads to work with. if you're going to doa complete teardown put in a counterbalanced crank and bump the cam up one or two steps while it's apart. be careful not to go overboard w/ the cam, though. 1.25 rockers are also a good bolt on and will be good for the most noticeable gain.
