Type 3 auto into a Vanagon with ej22, is it do-able?

I'm looking to do an ej22 conversion into an 1986 Vanagon auto, The factory auto needs an overhaul however i was just curious if a type 3 auto could be adapted
into it? I would give much better ratios with the more powerful motor. Has any body tried this?
