Waterboxer.

Post by Passatman »

Good day All,

I will be getting a waterboxer today and would like to know if when turbo charged if it was o.k. to keep the engine hydraulic system in tact or to go solid lifter with it.

Also do they make any performance cams for these engines.

The Germans have been turbo charging them for years reliably. I believe the cams are the same as a type 4 so you shouldn't have a hard time finding a performance one and you might want to look into lowering the compression if your going to turbo charge the motor.

You can keep it hydraulic if you like. It depends on intended use. CB performance sells a few hydraulic grinds for the type 1 that work well in the wasser. You will need an early flat style type 1 cam-gear and type 1 oil pump to go with it. I recomend an o-ringed oil pump.
I'm running the CB 2253 cam and 9-10lbs of boost with injection and ignition controll off a 1988 Volvo in my Vanagon. No need to drop the compression unless you plan on high boost.
It makes more than enough power for my van (quickly hits 100 before rev limit kicks in) and would be a lot of fun in a beetle that weighs exactly half as much.
I haven't even hooked up an intercooler yet and have never heard any pinging even really pushing it when hot .
