Wait and wait and wait and wait.....yea brown guys just updated the tracking and it seems that they only run the freight trucks to my F'ing rural location once a week  Thursdays  yea that was yesterday...wont see it till next Thursday now. Been on the phone with them this morning trying to see if I can drive the 75 miles to pick it up....we'll see.

Not real happy about the fact that my trans sat in Cali one extra day now

So I'sa gunna get in me ol'truck and makes me a trip to the Big city 75 miles each way... golly gee I hope ol' Betsy is worthy of the trip. :D

Sad thing is it's only 71miles to Seattle but because I live way over on the other side of them big ol' mountains....I am rural and have to go to the unmanned terminal

Got a mental picture of Ellwood do ya???

Yup, that was exactly him :D I have never been so happy to meet a guy named Ellwood in my whole life.

Crazy thing here is... I met him at a Peninsula Freight dock  Remember the motor story from the last page? Yea I have one of those docks in my town 5 miles away, but drove 150miles round trip to get my trans today instead of next Thursday

Tell us when to expect you so we can send out a search party.

Congrats on the engine!

OK Igot it here...now what?

Trying to figure out where to even start... I got it on the table measuring it up....will post pics and specs later but the thing is way different than the 002 that I have. Got a feeling somebody is going to get a heck of a deal on some axles

Man this trans is huge. I think that the stock horns have to go...I am trying real hard not to just cut the whole housing out and start from scratch. It just does not seem as though I will be able to get the drive flanges as far forward as I have seen in some of the 091 installs I have seen here. Trying to get my head around the geometry of the axle arcs/plunge. I have read DesertGuys posts on another site that is the best explanation of this that I have seen...But, that said... I don't understand it yet

Anyway...enjoy

Here is a few interesting specs compared to the 002 and type 1 that I have.

Width from face of drive flange to face of drive flange
Weddle 9.075"
002 11.010
type 1 10.180

Bell housing face to center of drive flange
Weddle 10.208 (pushes the motor back 2+ inches...I don't love that)
002 8.072
type 1 7.377

Height from bottom of trans to center of drive flanges
Weddle 5.506
002 4.550
type 1 4.037

Height from bottom of trans to center of bottom motor mount holes in bell housing
Weddle 4.00
002 2.577
type 1 2.427

These last two dimensions are interesting... by comparing the difference in the two you see the difference in the height of the engine in relation to the drive flanges.

Weddle 5.506 -4.00 = 1.506
002 4.550 -2.577 =1.98
type 1 4.037 -2.427 =1.61
So the Weddle will raise the engine about a 1/2" compared to the 002. I would love to see how this all compares to a mendi and an 091

Here is how I got all of these measurements... I set the trans on the flat level table then shimmed it up till the bell housing was 90 degrees to the table and then leveled the 2 lower bell housing holes...If anybody has an 091 sitting loose and wants to take the time to add it I'm sure somebody may be able to use that info someday....especially the guy that is thinking of upgrading to one of these from and existing mounted trans

I think that I understand how to limit/reduce plunge with t/a placement, but I'm not yet able to articulate it. Link to DG's explanation? Maybe that will help.

http://www.race-dezert.com/forum/showth ... -placement

So what I have now is with the rear arms set natural 0 degrees to the chassis the measurement from the face of the drive flange to the face of the drive flange of the stub axles is 50.75" divided in half =25.375" and the trans width is 9.075" divided in half = 4.5375" so 25.375" -4.5375 = 20.8375" :? so I think that is the distance from trans to microstub. And a quick measurement to the frame table says that with the trans touching the center spline of the stock torsion housing will yield a max swept angle is about 2"

for what it worth...I have 21.25 axles now...not sure that they will work yet...I'm thinking that they are short?

Headed out to fire up the plasma cutter :? We'll see

So with some trimming I have it temp set in the stock horns...pics later. I have about 3-3/4 from the end of the stock horns to the center of the cv drive flange...sure could use a number from somebody that has an 091 in a stock frame horn tell me how much different than them I am? the stock horns are going away but I am still retaining them for today just for reference

I just ran out and checked, I moved my 091 side-shift forward 1/2" when I mounted it, and it measures approximately 6" from the end of the frame horn to the center of the c/v.
So roughly 5 1/2" should be what a stock-type mounted 091 measures? Theres a lot of 091's around here, surely someone else will chime in.

You using a 10 degree style mount? or your own? 3x3 arms?

I based mine on the cheapo mount, 2x3 arms.

As far in as you are, why not just ditch the torsion all together and build one. My understanding is that the stock torsion angle isn't optimum for camber gains. So at this point why not just do it. I'm sure Desertguy or Getrdone can give you a better explaination. I think we are at 7 degrees on the Things, and I think that nets us about 4 degrees or so at full bump.
