DIY ingition system using toyota parts
a friend of mine that has passed, told me about the possibility of using a toyota ignitor and high performance coil (say from the Camry) and convert the VW to a points-less high voltage ignition system. Has any one ever tried any thing like this? Or tried our experimented with anything like this? Looking forward to hearing from u.

Search for "Go Fast For Less" there was some sort of write-up about utilizing other electronic systems there. Here is another to search "HEI Ignition Module For Use With Points" by Louis Dudzik. And here is another "http://web.archive.org/web/200008162205 ... strign.htm" this last one is titled "Transistorized points ignition" and utilizes Toyota parts. I have all these articles printed out but don't know how to get them on here. Also, as I remember without actually reading through the articles, I don't think they actually eliminate the points, just take all the load of the points. You might give some thought towards the Pertronix or Compufire products instead as they do actually eliminate the points. I have used both the Pertronix and the Compufire setups in the past and presently am still running my bug with a Pertronix and a Thing with a Compufire and am well pleased with both systems. The Pertronix is running with a Denso (Japanese) coil from a Toyota and the Compufire is running with a Bosch Blue Coil. I am still running points in my 67 single cab, and am probable going to change it over to the Compufire unit as I prefer the Compufire method of triggering the unit over the Pertronix method as the magnets are imbedded in a plastic piece rather than held in place with tape.

Martin i like your setup, interestingly i bout a compufire and connected it based on the instructions. I have a 2.0 Type 4 van. The van starts with 1 kick, however when the rev load goes on it backfires and spits and bucks. My dizzy is vacuum advance, and i bought the coresponding unit from compufire for the vacuum advance dizzy. Interestingly when i got the van it didnt have the vacuum line. With the points I dont notice a difference with the idle, and the van drives normally. My Carb is the Weber Progressive DGEV, and i dont know if it's pulling enough vacuum to begin with. I installed a vacuum line to see if there was a difference, and I didnt see a difference. Can anybody tell me if its the lack of vacuum why the compufire isnt working properly?

I am running a 009 dist in each of mine and have not had any problems as you speak of. Many years ago I had a DGEV on a 1641 and had no problems, but I was running a 009 disty so probably not any help to you.

Did you check the timing after changing to the Compufire? Could be way out. Should be about 28-32 deg full advance with vacuum off and capped and over 40 with vacuum connected.Bug-a-natic wrote:Martin i like your setup, interestingly i bout a compufire and connected it based on the instructions. Thanks mate for the reply, how is the vacuum adjusted with the Compufire? By rotating the dizzy?

You say you connected a vacuum line. Did you hook up to Manifold vacuum or to Ported vacuum on the DGEV?

I connected the vac line to the carb. I've read somewhere that these carbs are famous for not pulling enuff vac due to the size of the hole in the port. Do you know about this?

Re: DIY ingition system using toyota parts
I have only used the DGEV with 009 carbs on VWs. I have used the DGAV on a Mazda and utilized the carbs ported vacuum for the dist and it worked well. You might try to find a larger vacuum can to utilize the amount of vacuum you do have available. You will get more pull with a larger diameter vacuum can with the same amount of ported vacuum than with a small diameter vacuum can. I can't be of much help to you with past experience with VWs and vacuum advance dist. Note the only difference between the DGEV and the DGAV is the manner in which the choke is activated.

You can't adjust the vacuum to my knowledge. What I was suggesting was checking the timing with and without the vacuum connected. This will show you the effect of the vacuum. You may also find you have vacuum at idle, which you don't want as it will start advancing the timing.Bug-a-natic wrote:Thanks mate for the reply, how is the vacuum adjusted with the Compufire?
