Dipstick way too hot to handle

My engine gets abnormally hot. My dipstick is scorching hot, and when i open the oil cap, steam rises out for a few minutes. It does really run like crap when it does get hot. Any suggestions on how to fix this or what i can do to solve this problem. thanks. 1600cc single-port..

You need to find out what is causing it. What have you checked?

-fan
-fan belt
-thermostat/flaps
-timing
-valve adjust
-oil
-all sheet metal in place!
-heater hoses connected properly
-heat off

Stuff like that..

From your "name" I read it is a 59 model. In those years the the engines were not 1600. The problem could be with your engine lid. Not enough ventilation.

Y3K, ventilation is the same for almost all the cars(excluding verts). A 59 has the same vents and engine compartment as most all type 1's. Firs make sure that all you seals are in place, if not, its a good Idea to get them in. After that, there are a number of things that could be causing it. Have you had a tune up lately? Timing and fuel/air mixture play a vast role in engine temps. Go over the obvious first, it might save you some time. Gook luck

I think Y3K was referring to the hood vent.
If 59vwbug has a 1600 in a 59 bug he may need a late model or vert hood with extra vents for the additional cooling. That and the other factors mentioned should cool him down.

With my 72 I was having overheating problems also. Found the carburator was running too lean.

I still dont agree. Plenty of people have larger motors and arent runnig a Convertible decklid. There is plenty of ventilation with the stock vents. If everything is built correctly, and all seals are in place, it should only be sucking cool air from the top. It is most likely something else.

i have to agree with 63ragtop. i have a 69 bug and with the same engine (1600 sp). on my car the decklid is solid. no vents at all and my engine doesn't run hot at all. it's got to be the fan or gas mixture.
