Pushrod Seals

Is it possible to replace the pushrod seals in a type 2 engine, without removing the engine?

Since you'd have to remove the heads, doghouse, tins, carb(s), alternator, generator, and exhaust to do so - not easily. The pushrods themselves are easy enough. You might be able to replace the pushrod tubes if you get the spring-loaded kind, but not the stock ones.

I thought on the type 4 engine the pushrod seals could be changed after the heads were on and there were clips that secured them to theheads. Just the valve covers and rockers must be pulled to get to the pushrod tubes.

I don't if there is a difference but the engine is a Type 2 not a Type 4

well i knowmy type 1 engine kind of know the type 3
this is the type 4 (which cameinthe later busses)

The type 2 (bus) engines were pretty much identical to the type 1 (bug, thing, etc) up until 1971 (I think) aside from a set of tapped holes for the mustache bar, the support that attached to the back of the engine. What year is your engine? If it's early, then you prob ably can only do it by switching to the pushrod tubes with springs. Some people like them, some insist they always leak.

Like that. you can remove the pushrod (ie, remove the rocker arm on that head), remove the old one, put in the spring-loaded replacement, replace the rod and rocker arm.

If you're trying to do it with the bellows-looking stock steel, there's no real way to get the head loose enough to allow the replacement pushrod tube to compress (unless you take the engine out of the car).

Removing the engine isn't as big a job with a VW as it is with most other cars - if you need to pull it to replace the pushrod, don't give up.

All '73 Transporter came with Type 4 engines in the US market. The pushrod tube seals are easily replaced with the engine in situ on these motors.

There is no Type 2 engine per se. Type 2 Transporters in the US came with either Type 1 motors up through 1971 or Type 4 motors from 1972 onwards. In other parts of the world the Type 1 motor saw use in Transporters much longer, until it was replaced by one of several water cooled engines.

That is why I thought a picture of what i thought your engine would look like might clarify things a bit. :wink:

Yes, the type 4 p/r tube seals can be replaced without pulling the engine. pull the valve covers, remove the wire clip from the rockers, remove 1 pair of rockers, exhaust and intake. I like using a pair of snap ring pliers to remove the tubes. If the tube is not damaged, clean it off, install new seals, put them back in, reinstall the rockers using 11 ft. lbs. torque on the nuts. repeat procedure for each cylinder as is necessary. Adjust valves to spec when p/r repairs are completed.
