Back under a different name.... Rallycross
FJ and all, I had to register a different user name because the other account was made under a work email address I no longer have access to. Long story of bad health and long term disability, no biggy, leaves me more time to start this project!
I have a 1964 KG, the body is a pile of rust and I plan on preparing it for SCCA's newest Rallycross class, Modified Rear. In the past all modified RWD cars had to compete with FWD cars and lose in the dirt now we have our own class.
I'll be competing mainly against modified BMW 325 and 318s. I have to come up with a plan of attack to give me a competitive car at a moderate price. I figure the handling, power to weight and rear engine are the strengths. My weakness is lack of HP although HP is only so useful with a 2wd car.
Sooooo pretty much any engine/shock/tire combo goes, don't even have to have a muffler. Interior will be race stripped and I'll run stock windscreen up front so I don't have to buy an ITA cage, lexan in the rest of the windows and probably some sort of ducting going from the rear delta glass area to the cylinders.
Floor pan is shot, I'm planning on pulling the heater channels and welding in 14 or 16ga sheet with some tubing welded under it to reinforce the area (any other suggestions, don't want to spend $500 on floor pans). I'd like to run a cage because I think it would really help tighten the body/suspension up but not sure if I can get momma to cut that check.
Suspension is going to be the nice buggy shocks FJ sent me (thanks again!) and KYB or Bilsteins on the back (unless you have other suggestions) and converting over to a rear disk instead of keeping the disks.
Open to suggestions for the engine, would prefer something "cheaper" to build but remember I do have to compete with BMWs.
Any other suggestions?

Frank, yes it is. Me and the VA medical system have become very intimate with each other 
I know the easiest thing to do is just buy this 325is with LSD I located and gut it, but where's the fun in that?
If you need a bubble washer or floor sweeper let me know, I've got free time on my hands most days.

I'm waiting for the next rallycross around here to run in. I have a set of snow and light truck tires to run with. I autocross with my bug but kept the suspension travel within reason (not too lowered) to be able to rallycross with the car. After driving the piss out of the car in several autocrosses, I'm getting closer to getting the suspension dialed in. Plan on going with Bilsteins in the rear to help my wheel lift in the front, I'll let you know how it goes.
One thing I would suggest would be some simple guards to smooth out the underside of the car, not that I have a world of rallycross experience though. Stroker motor as well if you can afford it, they do quite well on short course events like this.

Nice ride! Not really sure how effective aerodynamics would be once the red clay and weeds start to stick all over the car 
I plan on leaving the KG stock height to allow for wheel travel. From running my VW Fox it's important to keep the car off of the bump stops, first time I ran RX with old shocks it sounded like the drumline of a marching band on meth.

I see something like this using every bit of that big old wing even at 'low' speed on our short course events like rally and autocross. Every bit helps on our cars.

Sorry guys for not being around for a long time...

I ran the old rally Ghia vs a few 325s and 2002s.
I would not recommend to jump to the Mod class unless momma wants to keep cutting checks. The Ghia is fairly completive in the Prepared class but not in Mod since you deal with FWD cars.
A few things off the top of my head:
If you are running on rough terrain I recommend to bolt up a piece of steel from the rear pan to cover the trans and motor. This beats breaking something later.
You will need to make sure you have a good intake filter system or your motor will ingest dirt and kill your rings quickly. Check the inside top of your carb/s after the race to see if it is muddy inside and you will know if what you have for a filter is working or not.
Fix your floor and seal the interior as well as you can or it will get tough to see and breathe.
If you are on a budget and can not afford rally tires use snow tires with the widest sipes allowable.
I’m not sure where you are but if you are around the Wash DC area I can give you a hand.

Hey Brent, nice to see you!
They made a change and now RWD has it's own Mod class. There's like 3 guys down here working on ACVWs to run in it.

I went for my first rallycross over the weekend, that was nuts. I managed not to break anything luckily, but the course was really rough. A lot of gravel and hitting deep ruts cross-ways at good speed. Very bumpy.
