Vented Gas Cap for a Late ('78) Bay?

Post by Daniel G »

Does anyone know of a vented gas cap (universal or VW) that will fit a '78 Bay gas tank? I have had a lot of bad luck with fuel lines breaking down due to the gas around here. I am kind of wary to keep the stock charcoal canister and all the related rubber lines with all the hidden spots I will have to keep an eye on for leaks. If I can find a vented cap that fits well I may ditch all that stuff.

I have a '71 Bay I might remove it from too if I can find a cap that would fit an early tank too. But its a much simpler setup with only one rubber line coming off the tank so I am not as concerned..Unless I find out the rubber line is breaking down, and in that case I will plug the fitting on the tank and seal it off

Before it comes up, my state doesn't do emissions testing so no worries there. I can always hook it all back up if necessary.

I don't hate the planet either. If this was a DD there is no way I would disable any emissions stuff. But it won't be.

It also gives me one less thing to worry about having to maintain. Plus I imagine the charcoal canister and all the lines weigh about 10lbs, so any weight this bus can lose is good. I will be driving it off-road so the lighter the better...

i would drill a pin hole in it if you must have a vented cap. also where are you getting your lines that keep breaking down? WCM sells poop non-fi lines, and afaik, there are fwe other suppliers of metric lines. I have yet to find a solution. going to try mcmaster fuel line if I can prove 3/16 will fit on the barbs. I know 1/4 is too big, i am running it on alot of my cars and i need to clamp to the point of ruining the lines to seal some connections, but its all thats avail local.

Doesn't a bay tank have plenty of small vent barbs off the top? Then don't vent the cap, just make high point and "p trap" out of steel brake line/hose/what ever.
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

I have been studying up on it and I am thinking about keeping it all. If I don't I am going to just have to drill a hole in the cap and be done with it. I am still debating though..I think the lines that will actually be exposed to gas the most are probably 7mm which means I could just use FI hose which should hold up to ethanol much better. I am going to look at everything really well and see what I could improve for offroad use. One thing I have noticed is that VW used some extra connections in places that one long metal tube would have been fine, such as behind the spare tire well..Not much I can do about that though. I have also seen a lot of the tubes are plastic and not attached to the bus, they just hang there..I am thinking of getting some steel brake line tubing the same size and replacing all the plastic lines that I can and spot welding them or clamping them in the engine compartment.

I am concerned that if I just use a vented cap and remove the vapor recovery system I run the chance of gas fumes floating up the side of the bus on a hot day and right into the open poptop. I really don't want to wake up or nap to the smell of gas when its hot outside.

So how hard is that alcohol fuel line to clamp?

Believe it or not we use zip ties most of the time. Pretty flexible stuff..

We use and sell fuel additives made by this company:

Most of the problems around here are with small engines and lawn equipment using blended fuels.
I do put it in my 67 Bug as well.
Seems to run smoother especially on hot summer days.

And as 'dog mentioned Tygothane fuel lines are pretty ethanol resistant.
I keep that in sizes to 1/4".

the FI stuff is fine, its just the low pressure w/ the braid covering that is junk. I use the FI, the price is a PITA but i have no altertnativs.
