Can we continue the Ball Joint topic - Can't find - Refab?

Post by callmehorse66 »

Hi guys,

I have looked everywhere for the darn ball joint (used the 411412165C & E numbers and the Autozone 10187). There is only 1 left in US at Rareparts place.

Is it possible to pry / press the old one out and put in another VW joint? What joint is same shaft size and can carry same load? The PN 113407361E looks very much the same (in the full replacement, 3-bolt flange version). Anyone know for sure?

Because I only have a cutting wheel, drill press, a MIG welder, and a hydr press (at work), I'd like to stay away from machining (also have little money). I'm thinking of doing is cutting the original joint out of the housing, leaving a good amount of material (somewhere near the dome part - 1.5" or so above the flange. That would leave a nice diameter on whick to center the "new" joint into. If I can find a joint with good matherial / flange on its socket / cup, I could weld it onto the old housing / flange. Any ideas ?

Did I miss a much earlier thread on this topic? Let me know... Thanks -Karl in Phoenix (Feb '74 412 wagon)
