6 to 12v ??

I have a low mileage 66 single port that is still 6v I want to put it into a 68 body thats of course 12v what will I need to change on the 66 engine to 12v? By the way the body has a 66 trans in it already I Have a running 71 dual prt with a cracked case to rob parts from Any help would be appreciated

*12V generator & pedestal (or alternator & pedestal if you want to convert the car to alternator). Either way you'll need a 12V strap and the 3 pieces of sheetmetal that go on the gen/alt before the fan, and a 12V pulley.
*12V coil
*12V choke heating element (or turn off the choke and leave it disconnected)
*12V idle cutoff jet for the 30PICT carb (the one from the 34PICT won't work), or a plain idle jet, which you may already have.

What starter is in the `66 trans now? Has the bellhousing been ground out to clear a 12V flywheel yet, and an adapter bushing installed to allow using a 12V starter, or is it still 6V all the way?
You can run a 6V starter on 12V for some time before it'll wear the flywheel teeth out.

Thanks Marc for the info the trans still has the 6v starter but I have a new bosch 12v starter that came with a bushing I hope this is what you are referring to and yes the trans has been ground already,the DP that i have actually came from that body Thanks

To run the 12V starter in the `66 trans you need a special thickwall adapter bushing that has the correct small ID for the 12V starter and the large OD to fit the 6V trans. You'll also need to put the 12V flywheel on the `66 engine; the `66 crankshaft should be of the O-ring design so this should be relatively simple (crankshaft endplay will need to be checked/reset) but if the `66 engine has the older gasket-seal setup it won't accept the 12V flywheel unless you have the ID of the lip in the flywheel opened up to fit over it.
You may want to just run the 6V flywheel and starter if the `66 engine doesn't need a front seal anyway.

Just got done doing this on my 63 ghia a week ago/nothing quite like blowing your nose and having aluminum come out.sneeze.

My starter bushing was being a pain to put in and didn't have a torch to heat the housing up so I put the busing in the deep freeze for a couple of hours and voila, tapped right in.

pulling the engine once=o.k.
pulling the engine 4 times=temper tantrum

i used a 1960 6volt in my 74 kit car,i used 6volt choke with a resister.drop 6volts,worked great.

if you use an auto stick starter, you don't have to worry about the bushing

Keep the 6V starter, the engine will start faster. I made this conversion in 1994, I kept the 6V starter and it works fine, it starts the engine very fast, even in winter.

you can run a 6v starter w/6v flywheel on 12v and it will spin the engine like a S.o.b butttt the starter gear is thrust out so fast and hard that it will start to eat up the flywheel. you do it right you do it once

What is a auto stick starter

I believe Bosch calls it a SR17X self supporting starter. It is used in Automatic and semi Automatic trans applications. Samples would be a Beetle or Ghia auto stick, Type3 full Automatic and maybe Bus automatic. I hope this helps.
