Try a different cable, there have been funkey ones in the past. I'm using the one from Radio Shack, it works well.

Sounds like they have a different brand now, this is the one I bought a while ago: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index ... Id=3120513#
Had to have that long 6' cable, so it would reach from the back seat to the front where the laptop is at.

If your software is looking for a RS-232 port ( "serial" or "comm' port) and you are a USB adapter, you have to tell the software configuration what RS-232 port ( serial or comm) the USB adapter is using... USB adapters can arbitrarily use any COMM port numbered 1 through 8 (serial port number)....
If the port the USB adapter has selected is not the same as in software configuration, the software (computer) and ecu are not going to "talk" to each other and you will get a "time out' or "port not found" error..
Was a thread about USB/COMM port communications a while back in "engine management " thread....
IF you think its a USB adapter/comm port problem, some relief may be found here...
