411/412 parts that are compatible with other VW's.

Post by 19super73 »

I picked up a few 411's and a 412 as parts donors for my '73. Aside from the engine, are there other parts on these cars that are compatible with Ghias, type 3's etc? I was told that dash switches were, 411 front turn signals were the same as '72-'74 Ghias. Anything else that anyone knows about? I would prefer that what I don't want or can't use doesn't just deteriorate to nothing.

`71/`72 IV front brakes are the same as late`71-`73 III.
All years IV rear brakes are the same as 4-lug III except for the center hub.
Electric heater booster fan can be adapted to `72-up buses or grafted into Beetles/etc.
CV joints are the same as Thing, have more travel than I/III or II and are therefore in demand for increased-travel off-road applications.

Yes...to add to that....as marc noted the late type 3 fronts are the same as the EARLY type 4...so 71-72 type 3 fits 68 to august of 1972 type 4. The same early rotors calipers and backing plates fit Porsche 914 to August of 1972. The September 73 and on type 4 fits 73 and on 914.

Inside of the car....the steering wheel, steering wheel cover, ingnition lock, lever assemblies and washer/blinker mechanism are the same as late super and late type 3. Late type 4 seat belt assemblies (1972 on) also fit 71-72 type 3 and some late supers.
I believe outer tie rod ends are the same as one part # of type 3 and the inner bent tie rod ends from either a type 3 or beetle will fit type 4.

The speedo and clock were used in late ghias...but it is a typ 4 number. the steering idler bracket will bolt into a super with some clearance. the idler arm bushing is the same super to 412.

The switches...headlight, emergency flasher and defroster will in fact fit in other vehicles (ghis type 1 and type 3)....but no others will fit into the type 4. In fact its a waste to put type 4 switches into type 1 based vehicles because....ther are plenty of switches for those and sofew for type 4. The snouts of the switches are longer on type 4. ther are now enough type 4 owners out there that will eventually need these switches that you should be able to sell them npo problem.

E-brake lever fits type 3 along with boot. there are other smaller details as i think of them. Ray
