Getrdone's GETR181

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

I think you did .... I did see a head pokeing out of your hot ass shed gasping for breath when I scooted past in my ubber cool 40 series :D

I picked up a complete Subaru Wagon last night to pull down and use for mock up in the Manxter, you are more than welcome to come and have a look at it when I have it out.

How many HP did your VW engine have ?

How much do you think these things will weigh ? dare I ask ?

Well, could the Subaru trans handle 33" tires? Would it have any gear for low end? I sure don't need to break 100mph! But I sure need to climb blow sand and sand dam!
I am hoping to weigh in around 2500-2800. I am totally guessing though.

33's no problem if you are happy with what an 091 can do a Subaru will do it better.

As for ratios, post what you are going to run and I will let you know what the closest Subaru can do. With a subaru you can even use Reverse with your 33's and not have to walk home .....

With the 5 speed you get a very nice spread.

300HP ...... that must be one of those American Imperial Horse Power numbers ... the give or take a couple of hundred gets it back closser to reality

Man, back to setting up shock angles again. This bites. Had it all figured out and I go and change the arm. Well, it's pretty though. Lots moe bling to add. As far as gear, dunno. Low medium and high? Oh, and backwards.

If you plan on running a Suby motor to climb Blow Sand or Sand Dam, you should seriously consider running the .001" over Race bearings and a larger oil pump. Go ahead... ask me how I know!

It's not complicated, it's just expensive...

That's lite, here on the mainland that is. Do you have a mock tranny too. And Herbie I see it coming.

I really dont need to climb those two. I actually never tried in anything other than a blown CJ. Give me a call when you pull the motor, or if you need a hand.

If I am overweight it will be because of the steering column and fire extinguisher mount!

Iguana, my original thought was to use the Subaru transmission along with the EJ25 that I had purchased. However with the weight of the car and running
33's I was concerned. So I Emailed Todd from Subarugears and asked him about strenght of the ring and pinion and whether he was planning on making anything higher than a 4.4 ratio. He told me that with the 6.5 inch diameter limit of the ring gear due to trans case, going higher than a 4.4 would really compromise the strength. Then I read this

OK, back here again! We competed in the Qatar Baja last month and came 4th overall out of 25 starters.

Pics here: https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/med ... 167&type=1

Remember we had changed out the Subaru 5 speed gearbox (which we lunched) to a 4.444 ring and pinion? Well this worked relatively well and didn't give us any problems over the 360 kms of the event. The gearing was marginally better in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, but it was still not ideal - 5th gear was still too tall. The rev drop was still too much from 1st to 2nd.

Anyway, we were doing some demo runs yesterday with a group of Swedes (guys, not gals before you all get excited!) who were visiting the Emirates when the ring and pinion destroyed itself again! This means that I won't be experimenting with the Subaru transmission anymore and will be going for the HV-1. Shame really as I can get used Subaru gearboxes for 1/32 of the price of a Weddle!

Note that the Subaru gearbox may actually be OK in a light bug with smaller wheels, but with 31" wheels, a weight of 1,100 kgs and in race mode, it certainly doesn't like it!

So, I decided that until there was some more testing and reviews done that I would just run an 091. I actually found a full built Wright box for a steal. As for Clint's car, a subaru would really be the ticket, but by the time you just get the trans and R+P you are looking at around 2K. Then changing the gear ratios from 1-4 you are looking at some good money as well.

Ok fine. I am going to stalk this thread until you get your car off the jig, then I'll hammer you to build me the pan!
