Cool!!

411/412 front suspension looks similar but isn't the same as a 1303. You should be able to get lowered springs made quite reasonably like me (try asking at a few local custom car shops) - otherwise cut the existing springs.

Can't wait to see your car finished. Can't wait to get my custom 412 variant finished either!

Nice one! I have cut springs on my 411, despite sounding bad, the ride is suprisingly good... I have slight shimmies, but I don't think its due to the springs..

When you turn the ignition, but not start it(with the batery connected), then the pump will hum for a few seconds then stop.

Another 411 4 door eh? I will try to get mine to Santa Pod this w/e. Pitty your not going to be there Neal, I was looking forward to our trip in the strip!

I'm just curious if type IVs were more popular/available over there in jolly old England(I'm in CA). I rarely see them here. I once saw a two-door fastback and decided right then and there that someday I'll have one. That was about eight years ago...still looking. 'Til I find one, I'll just tinker with my 1303

411/412s definitely have a stronger following in the UK than it does here. Besides myself and my brother, I don't know of anybody in my area that is a Type 4 fan. Most of the people give me the weirdest look when I tell them that I want to do a custom Type 4.

Good luck Sean with the 411LE. Keep us posted on your progress.

Neal, congrats on the VolksWorld feature. Keep us posted on when the issue hits the streets. I'll be looking for my copy of it.

The UK isn't full of Type 4s. There is only a small select bunch of custom 411/412 enthusiats here in the UK (and I know of one in Dublin, Ireland too), although that is starting to change.

I think the UK VW scene is starting to get bored with the Cal Look cars - don't get me wrong, there are some great cars out there, its just that they all basically look the same. A lot of people are now going for the 'German' look, especially 1303/02's with fast Type 4 engines.

To me it makes sense to base a custom on the most sophisticated aircooled VW ever made (the 411/412) and one that shows a lot more originality than simply copying the major trends.

Sean....You LUCKY DOG..... I would just Love a 4 door 411E with low mileage and unused for 11 years......although spare parts in Australia would be a problem.
All the Best with Your restoration.
Can someone tell Me which Years the 4111-412s
were made, and what countries they were sold in. I presume they were sold in the US hence the twin sealed beam headlamps on some models
I have a few books on VWs and only one shows
a photo of a 411 --with the FRONT BUMPER BAR OFF!!!!! I'm sure it wouldn't have taken much to find a nice 411 to Photograph. The book was printed in the UK....Lee Noonan

LeeNoonan,
If you are looking to learn more about the Type 4 car, check out my site, Tom's Type 4 Corner. I'm in the process of revamping the site, but it's about 90% done. You find it here: http://www.tunacan.net/t4corner/index.shtml

To answer a few of your questions:
1). The Type 4 was made from 1969-1974.
The 411 was from 1969-1972 and the 412 from 1973-1974.

2). The twin lights were introduced in the 1970 model year for all markets. The '69 was the only year to have a single headlight on each fender.

3). As for what markets it was available, I'd look over my page of the M-codes. It lists many of the markets that the Type 4 was sold. You'll find the M-Codes page http://www.tunacan.net/t4corner/reference/mcodes.shtml
