New to me 65 Karmann Ghia

Post by Talisman »

Hey guys, newbie here.
My grandpa has just acquired a 65 Ghia Coupe and put me in charge of getting her running. Its been sitting in a garage for 6 years.
I've dealt with domestics and my BMW 850ci, but never a VW.

Oil looks old obviously but not gunked up. I was going to manually turn the engine over with a 21mm wrench on the smaller upper pulley to turn the crank and see if it turns over fine and nothing binds.
Then drain the oil, check fuel lines and replace bad ones with the VW special braided line. Check the carb and clean it if need be, check points for gap, drain any junk old fuel, and finally fire her to see what other problems may be lurking.

Any advice on this procedure?

Hi Talisman,

Everything you said sounds good. Do drain and change the oil first. And pull the spark plugs to be able to crank it over fast to get the oil pump primed.
Get a good hot battery, some spray-start ether, and you're good to go.

Be advised the drum brakes may have seized up. Put the car in neutral and roll it back and forth to find out.

Thanks!
Brakes aren't seized up, rolls so easy!
Going to inspect the single chamber master cylinder before driving it, I hear they can be an issue.

All the rubber fuel line should be replaced. Drain the gas tank too.

Well need some more help guys! This car is missing the quarter window to driver window seal. I've ordered two that have been listed for a 65 and they aren't the correct thickness. The ones that arrived are very thin and the one I need is thick, and attaches to the quarter window pillar and fits behind the driver window.

Couple of places where you might find what you need. House-of-ghia.com & Karmannghias.com ( or Karmannghia. com. I don't remember which it is) Check out the sites, but call and talk direct to make sure they understad what you need before placing an order. Good luck with the build.
