Aftermarket Exhaust

OK guys,
What do you use for non-stock exhaust? Bughaus.com has new Bugpack mufflers for 411/412's but I'm pretty sure they're made in China and appear to be OK quality. Should I spend the extra for a Bursch? I want just a good replacement for the stock muffler.
Thanks,
Clay

The only stock mufflers I would buy are (in order):
Ernst: German, highest quality, flows about 10-15% better than stock, heavier...very nice welds fits like a glove...they have a web site somewhere.
Leistritz: Next best...this is oem. Not as nice in the welds , a little lighter, still very nice, nice fit in general. Stock last for years.
Dansk: Denmark. Good metal. Sloppy welding. You will have to grind little burrs away in the ports. Rusts a little faster, but cheaper and built and designed at least correctly.Sometimes have minor fitting problems due to sloppy welds...but are generally accurate. This is the one RMMW sells in their catalog.
Everything else is junk. The Ernst was about $180 3 years ago. Its worth it. They date, part# and serial # their factory mufflers and they flow and sound great. There are not many basic cheap headers for type 4 that flow and look as well on a stock motor. Now these are stock...In non stock header types...I havn't found anything yet (that I could afford) that was worth spending the money on. You either get a custom system thats built great...or you buy what other people are selling in their catalogs. I had a bugpack a while back. It had horrible imbalance from manifold to manifold, rusted fast, needed extra bracing and had really ugly welds. I havn't bought an aftermarket header since...but I'm looking. Ray

Ray,
Thanks, I?m glad to see I wasn?t the only one who didn?t like the Bugpack muffler, luckily I didn?t ?buy it to try it?. I?m looking to add some performance with a new bolt-up muffler. I?m not racing, just looking for more performance when the original goes-out. The tail-pipe flange is getting pretty close to rust-through.
Can 1.7L 914 mufflers also fit if I remove the rear valence (?), the perforated piece that hides the muffler from view? Are the original, stock headers worth replacing too? I have the factory F.I., will a new exhaust cause pressure problems?
Has any body else replaced the muffler? If so, with what? Jake, what do you recommend with your new motors??

I have found few substitutions for the original headers. Not to say that the couple I have seen do not probably flow a little better (Fat performance has some I think)...just that the fit is not great...and the heater boxes will be gone. Unless you are using a 914 1.7 monza exhaust, it will be identical to the 412/411 muffler. Same engine right down to the last part # (minus the reverse headers of course). The Ernst is the best I have found...and is really excellent. It flows noticibly better than stock...but not a whole lot. Its mainly cleaner construction. Very heavy duty. If you are keeping the stock injection (you should) ANY exhaust change...even to a new stock muffler, should result in at least a minor fuel mixture adjustment, but don't be alarmed. Ray
