engine revs in second gear

Post by alicheat »

Hi All,

1974... 412... automatic... l-jet... just tuned... idles nice...

What would make the engine rev big after it changes from first to second gear? All other gears are fine and smooth. Happens every time. Someone mentioned the clutch slipping, but do I have to worry about that with an automatic?

It sounds like you have a brake band slipping for the second gear set. The band adjustments are external on this transmission. They are hard to reach, but can be adjusted by tightening lock screws that go through the outside of the case. Follow the directions in clymer, haynes manuals. In fact thats about all the info on the auto that those manuals have. The bentley type 3 manual has better info...its the exact same transmission..except for final drive ratio in some years. It may just be loose. Ray
