Electrical Short
Recently the battery went dead on my 412. I removed it, charged it, then when I went to install it, it would spark on me. I removed all fuses in the box and in the engine compartment, and it still sparks. My connections looked good on the solenoid and starter. I looked at wires going to the ignition switch, and all looked okay. What else should I look for?

Solenoid or a relay (like for the FI or window defogger) stuck, maybe an alternator diode shorted... keep isolating.
Hook a 12v lamp between the battery post & cable and start disconnecting things until it goes out.

Thanks, Mark.
I narrowed it down to the alternator. There's a spark there when I try to connect the battery. Now, is there anything I can do without having to take the whole thing out? I have another alternator around, is there a way to test it?
