I've narrowed down my electrical short to the alternator. When I connect my battery, sparks fly from the front of the alternator. Is there anything I can do besides removing it? It seems like I have to remove a lot of stuff just to get to the connections. Any tips? Does this mean that the alternator is shot?
Thanks for any advice....

Sounds like an internal B+ short in the alternator and not too hopeful for repair without removing it. Have you tried spinning the alternator and listening for rattles, etc.? Does the wiring between the alternator and voltage regulator and battery and starter motor appear unhacked? I assume you have access to a Haynes or Clymer Type 4 manual and have already traced the wiring diagram to make sure nothing has been misconnected by a DPO.
I changed the alternator on my 412 wagon this fall and here's some of what you'll have to remove to get it out: muffler valence, muffler, muffler heat shield, right heat exchanger, the metal/plastic/paper tubing that goes from the right heat exchanger across to the aux. blower, right rear engine tin (around the oil filler tube), alternator cover tin, oil dipstick and oil filler rubber tubes, plastic fan guard, plastic fan guard air boot, and the air cleaner housing assembly. Took me about 3 hours for disassembly alone. Be sure to soak those exhaust system bolts good with PB Blaster or Kroil before you start wrenching on them.

I hope you didn't take the battery terminal OFF with the motor running.
Good way to Pop the diodes in the alternator

Thanks, Hank, but no, I didn't.
Also, can anyone around Los Angeles give me a recommendation of a place to take the alternator to? I have it out now and wish to have it tested and rebuilt, if need be.
