tempature switch

Post by vwwannabejunky »

I have a 1972 bus with a type 4 and dual Dellortoes. I'am trying to hook up the vacume advance but i can't find the tempature switch to hook up to the cut off switch for the vacume advance. and i was wondering where it was.

tempature switch

Look over at the ceiling just above and in front(front means front of car)the battery. There is a thermistor that grounds out at 65F or something. This completes the circuit through the transmission switch and solenoid vacuum valve which is located right near the blower assembly also up at the ceiling. All this mess accomplishes is to shut off your vacuum advance in the three lower gears of your Bus when it is warmer than 65 in the engine compartment. It is *designed* to mess up your smooth driveability in the name of lower NOX emissions. The very first thing I did to my '73 Bus in 1979 when I bought it, was to run the vacuum advance directly from the carb to the distributor.
The beautiful little solenoid vacuum valve now is in service in my '62 Lincoln Continental as a climate control auxiliary heater booster vacuum relay. Thanks, VW.
