vw thing wiring
I have a thing book with wiring diagram. My question is - is there a place on line or book that shows the exact position each wire goes? The diagram I have shows - for example - 6 wires going to the headlight switch, but does not show what prong the specific wires go to. Any help would be appreciated

Usually there is a number given where each wire goes to the switch relay etc.
then the actual swetch relay etc has a number on it next to each contact.

The numbers on the diagram - usually there are two digit numbers (sometimes followed by a letter) that indicate the specific connection. Look on the relays and switches, you'll see the two digit plus letter on each contact. There are also numbers that indicate the size of the wire, which is less useful.
If you get it wrong, the first time you hook up power you'll pop fuses - which fuse blows, shows you where the problem lies. Fix the problem, replace the fuse, try again. When you've eliminated all the fuse-popping problems, turn off the ignition, disconnect the negative lead from the battery, and touch the terminal back to the post on the battery - if you see a spark, you still have problems... remove the first fuse, touch the contact, if the spark is gone you have found the circuit with the problem. If not, replace the fuse and remove the next one. If you get to the last one and you haven't eliminated the spark, remove all the fuses, put ONE in, check for spark - you may have problems in more than one circuit.
Once you've solved the electrical problems, you'll be amazed at how much more fun it will be to drive your Thing. Don't give up hope, each problem is simple to diagnose and usually simple to fix, all you need is that wiring diagram, a multimeter, and some patience.
