RIGHT I HAVE AN ON GOING PROBLEM WITH MY GHIA.THE BATTERY KEEPS GOING FLAT!!!
SOUNDS SIMPLE I KNOW BUT THE PROBLEM IS I HAVE PORSCHE914 GAUGES FITTED AND THEY DONT TELL ME IF THE DYNAMO OR REGULATOR IS SHOT!
I HAD THE ENGINE TICKING OVER THEN DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY AND IT CARRIED ON RUNNING WITHOUT A HITCH,GREAT THE DYNAMOS FINE I THOUGHT.BUT THEN I TRYED IT AGAIN AND THE ENGINE DIED!! I REPEATED THIS SEVERAL TIMES AND SOMETIMES IT WOULD RUN AND SOMETIMES IT WOULDNT?? SO I CHANGED THE DYNAMO YESTERDAY BUT ITS STILL DOING THE SAME THING!!! WOULD THE REGULATOR CAUSE THIS PROBLEM?? I THOUGHT ONCE THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING A KNACKED REGULATOR WOULDNT MAKE THE ENGINE CUT OUT,AM I WRONG?????

Goes without saying to check all the connections on the regulator, particularly the grounding wire. Jut replace the silly thing while you're at it as it's fairly cheap. The Generator(Dynamo) is generally a very robust item, the mechanical regulator has a limited lifespan however.
