What to Do...........What to Do!

Post by mountainkowboy »

Didn't know where else to post this.

As you know I just got my SB vert and I still haven't been able to hook up and get the 71 SB sedan that I found to the house yet, nor have I paid for it yet.

I've found a 68 Ghia that's pretty rust free, all there, and mostly straight. It needs to be redone, but I'm told it was a running driving car a year ago when parked. From what I can tell it was bought by a kid that knows nothing about ACVW's, and has now moved out of Moms house and she wants it out of the garage.

So here is the dilemma............come May I can only have 1 car, cause of where we are going to move. I have been a Ghia guy............like forever, but I love verts too. Does a 68 KG have IRS?

Yes, a 68 Ghia has IRS.
Leaving a Ghia to rot should be a crime.

They all need a good home, get both, they're small.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

My bad, my poor brain cells thought Ghias and T3s got IRS a year early as the premium models.
They also got front discs in 66.
(I was once great at trivia, but I have slept since then)

It was just the autosticks, but a running/driving/rust free getitouttamyyard Ghia... still deserves to go to a good home.

Save them both and then you have a choice on what to keep and what to find a good home.

if the Ghia is straight, it could pay for the rest.
(I had a 64--- the swingaxle is not quite the handling problem on a Ghia it is on a bug, easily worked around, or for you, easily converted to IRS)

Nothing odd there, that's the way they all were. With front disc brakes, you got the 4x130 bolt pattern...but `68 Beetles had 4-wheel drums and still had 4-lug rims. The only "oddity" was the 4-lug drums used on the rear of `67 `Ghias (and Euro-spec 1500 `67 Beetles with disc brakes) - they had long splines, and a narrow friction surface to match the early skinny rear shoes. Few still exist, it was common to replace them with the "normal" `68-up rear drum.
I had a `68 AutoStick `Ghia, IRS of course, which I converted to 4-speed...but as helowrench said, until the `69 model year the manual-trans cars were swingaxle.

If you don't expect to drive it anywhere near the limit, a `68 `Ghia drives nicely enough. One could convert it to IRS to make it a better-handling car, but it'd be a tough call to say whether that would increase or decrease its value.

A purist would want it to remain swingaxle, but you could substitute some earlier, larger diameter torsion bars for the wimpy 21mm ones and shim the Z-bar links up to improve the handling some. If you don't care about posterity and just want your car to be the best it can be, weld in the pivot points and make it IRS.

I am definitely not the person to ask how many or which cars.
My answer is All Of Them
I currently have as many non registered cars as registered.
