As far as I know, the only difference may be your bumpers and your tail lights. In 1972 VW changed the size of the tail lights and started using "Europa" bumpers. Everything else I've read indicates that besides those two items, the KGs from 1971 through 1974 are the same. But I'm new to this so somebody please correct me if I'm wrong. As far as which one is better, I would simply keep the one in better condition and use the other for parts. That is if you have the amount of storage space that most of us don't have.

the big difference is parts supply. there are more parts available for 70-71 than 72-74 series. and that's because of numbers produced. not only do i have a 73 but it's a 'vert and some parts are extremely rare (like the door window scraper). if i had your choice i'd keep the earlier one because it had smaller taillights (the smaller they are the better they look), the bumpers are thinner (again aesthetics) and it's easier to find parts, new or used.
