Cheap type 4 turbo build.

Post by joosep »

few years ago I bought my first bug because I lost the race to Jussi Nurmi with my bmw
I made it lighter and put together a stock 1600 with some bmw turbocharger and MS1. It was made of used parts and it broke down oftenly because I liked the high boost (up to 2bar  )
Best ET was 13.9 and I could made it on 2 different ways :D
1) without first gear and 1.1 bar of boost and 160km/h top speed)
2) with 2 bar of boost for a start and with melted pistons for the end 150km/h
There were a third way too but never officially....but when it hold together I could reach 6400RPM what means 168km/h It should be really low 13 with street tires

It looked like this:

Then I repainted it but it didn't go any faster  13.9 was it limit with broken diff, blown hoses and hugh amount of problems.
Atleast it looked better:

(Only 2 rims...if anybody knows where I can find something similar to front I would like to know it)

Then I decided to chop it a bit lower because 1 wanted to be first and one of a kind in Estonia

once I compared type 1 and type 4 heads I decided to give away all my type 1 stuff. (I have no money for building 2L type 1 but type 4 already have displacement like this and stock heads flow more than ported type1 heads.

New engine will be put together of stock parts...mostly used parts. Only new bearings and gaskets (luckyli I got a new set 1.8L type4 heads) It will be something like that:

I have seen pictures of your twin turbo setup before, cant remember if it was on this forum. Your car was the inspiration for my twin turbo project.

Only difference on the header is that I paired 1-3 to one turbo and 2-4 to the other one.

your project is way cooler but thanks
I´ll try to make it with individual throttlebodys. For a first start maybe without a cooler because my First target is to get it just running and new paintcover. later I´m planning a big 4 port air/air cooler over the tranny with 2 x 10" or 2x12" vents. Then it should be able to make 400m without going too hot because 600x300x76 cooler what Im planning have a quite much weight.

I made exhaust as it is because of quick removing heads :D I can keep the turbo together with head when Im changing pistons or whatever. It takes 5 minutes to remove engine or 5 min to remove a head :D I know it not right way of building and I have to build it once and not for repairing but lets see. When it doesn´t work or spools really bad I'll make it totally different (1 turbo spinning until some boost is reached)

Target to get it running is on spring 2014 (March maybe)

Now I have to take inspiration of your car and make a new exhausts :D
Deem....I drowe to paper the working cycles and noticed that pairing like I did is really wrong. Actually its as bad as all 1 turbo 4 cylynder engines but I could get more power with pairing them correctly. (when I made them I thaught that the only reason is that pulses comes like 2 to one turbo and then 2 to second turbo) But actually cylynders would clean them from burned mixture better when there is no pressure in exhaust. Also I could use bigger cams, the detonation level would move and turbos would spoolup quicker.

Some welding now :D

I used to think that 2 turbos are not better than 1 but now it looks that its better when they are paired correctly on 4 cylynder engine...

Actually I've done nothing with my bug yet but it should run after3 months.
I'm still not decided what to do with cam because I have no money for cam + lifters + springs + pushrods + rocker bolts and 1.7 rockers + cam gear because it makes atleast 600-700$ but I know that I can't just replace the cam only or the cam with springs only. I bought 2 more engines but they were worn out as the other ones and now I have 5 stock cams all worn out.

If I had some time and no money I started with my rods.
I took 120gams off the stock 810g rod and now it weights 690g

Nice polishing joosep!

I suggest find someone localy that can make the valve springs to get that out of the way,

Try taking the worn out cam and check if tney can fill it and regrind it to specs. Also there are companies that can do the hardening that the cam needs.

Also the lifters can be made at a machine shop !

If you cant find or afford the parts just build them.

Good luck. :D
My welding sucks .

This car has never started with type 4 before.
And now when I want to re pair the exhaust I don't know how to locate the turbos then.
It has been an inspiration for more than U only but it doesn't eaven work :D

All pics I have: http://porsche-foorum.org/album/thumbna ... 143&page=1
If your virus warning alerts then U should no worry....I removed the ebay hack virus from gallery but it still alerts :(

I am from UK Manchester England.

I am not looking for lots of power or fast spool up i am using twin turbos to help improve the rev range but more over fuel economy too.

The one in your picture would work for me.

I noticed you have cut most of the back of your car away, I am wondering will this header still fit under a stock beetle rear setup?

Can you PM me your email address?

Would be 163/86b (108lobe) too much cam for stock 2,0 turbo? Ask because I could get it alot cheaper than other ones.

Im oriented to fastest quarter mile time but it should be able to move to race on its own wheels. (I don'care how comfortable it would be)
I need to spin it to 6500 and rise it later to 7000 and add some displacement later.

Should I rise static CR to atleast 8.5? If I keep boost under 1 bar It should be OK CR I think  Turbos should be able max to 1,5bar if I looked the map.

I have done the twin turbo thing with 4 different cofigurations, you can see it here.

Was thinking of using that cam in my 2270 turbo build. But I'll probably have them grind it on a wider lobe center to decrease overlap.

Those rods look real nice. Are you going to do something similar with the crankshaft?
