Any difference between pans?
Is there any difference between a '70 and a '71 pan? Don't care about seat mounts.. I'm just talking putting a '70 Body on a '71 pan? Yes, I know you wondering why.. but that's a longer story I don't want to get into right now.
thx.
thx.

I think the basic shape is the same but the people I went through were able to time it right to get the pans w/o the seat rails, heaters, and other stuff not spot welded in place. Just the battery mount.

I'm not sure of the exact date they changed over, but `70 is more likely to have double rear springplates and 4-bolt control arms while `71 will probably have the single, 3-bolt plates. No difference in the torsion housing though, so either setup fits either chassis.

My '71 has/had double spring plates. I heard it was sometime in '71 but haven't come across any specific pan number or date.
Edited to chang word from something to sometime to make more sense

Re: Any difference between pans?
Years ago I built a `70 Beetle into a Street Stock racer; they didn't require the correct VIN so I was able to "declare" that it was a 1971 in order to legally run a dualport engine. There were limited complaints about the "missing" vents behind the rear side windows but that was overlooked as a purely cosmetic distinction with no competitive advantage. However, a protest was raised over the double springplates by a competitor who ran a VW wrecking yard and was considered an authority. That placed the burden on me to prove that `71s existed with the double plates and I was unable to find any documentation to support it. Fortunately some of our shop's customers had early `71s which had them (with nothing to indicate that they'd been touched since the factory) and that was accepted as sufficient "proof".

I don't recall ever seeing any SuperBeetle with dual spring plates...anyone else with a `71 Super? Is it single or dual?

I'm just talking about putting a '70 Body on a '71 pan. Sounds like it's no problem.
Much thx.

As long as you are going like to like , you're fine. You can't put a standard body on a super pan or a super body on a standard pan. I guess that is kind of obvious....just wanted to make sure you weren't going to go and buy something that won't work.

Re: Any difference between pans?
The torsion bar should be the same but from what I have read here lately the cover might be different.

Re: Any difference between pans?
The cover (4 bolts and passage for torsion bar) is different between single/dual swing plates. It minor as one has stand offs to clear the second plate.
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

So is the cover different or are just the spacers different?

The cover is different because of the space
