What is this thing screwed to my mirror?

Hi I'm new to this site and Vw. I just picked up a 1970 beetle and I think I have everything figured out except this spherical shaped thing screwed to my rearview mirror. It's on an adjustable arm and is about the size of my fist. It kinda looks like a speaker but doesn't work with the radio. It looks like it belongs there but I've looked at hundreds of pictures and didn't see anything like it on any other car. Can someone tell me what this is?

Maybe a little fan or something? Not the greatest pic there. Another angle or two might help. Doesn't look like a Cell phone or gps mount to me. Neat looking from the pic that you posted.

In all honesty, I've never seen anything quite like that on a VW before. Does it have wires leading to it, and if so, from what?

Here's another pic if it helps. It does have 2 wires running to it but no switches or anything like that. I was kinda hoping someone could tell me what it is before I have to take the car apart to trace the wires

CB or radio speaker, no noise could be related to the paper cone rotting out or unhooked.

That movie came out the year I was born and I remember watching it on beta max lol. I forgot all about that til now. I'm just gonna tell everyone my bugs a spaceship from now on. I guess I'll just trace the wires and figure out where it goes to. I just kinda figured it was something that someone saw before. thanks for the help guys, I'm sure I'll have more questions soon.
