i have looked at the manual and cannot figure out what the heck this one wire is... from out of the body into the engine compartment (under the volatage regulator) are two brown wires in wire wrap. one grounds to the neg battery terminal, the other one is an unknown. it is brown with a small red stripe. i think it is a ground but i dont know what for. please help me figure this one out!

I have a 74 that I'm restoring and when I started the work, I took digital pics of everything ESPECIALLY the wiring harness. I'll check out the pics I have and see what mine went to. If my fading memory is correct, I think it goes up to a computer analysis connector ( or whatever they call it) up on the forward firewall. I'll let you know what I find.

The original battery had a center tap that a yellow and red striped wire connected to for the diagnostic plug - perhaps yours has aged enough to look brown?

thanks for the replies guys.
i went back and looked at it and it does look brown with red stripe, the other wire that is in the same factory wire sheath is brown with a yellow stripe. a previous owner has cut a lot of the factory test plug's wiring so it maybe that one but goodwrench, please check your pic. that would be great!

Or maybe they changed the colors between `73 (the diagram I'm looking at) and `74 in the `Ghia - I can't find a `Ghia-specific diagram for `74. Try checking continuity between the mystery wires and pins 7 & 8 of the diagnostic plug - 8 should be connected to the battery neg cable and 7 went to the center-tap on the OEM battery.

I checked all the pics I have of the wiring but sorry to say that I can't tell where it goes. One wire goes to the battery and the other runs up a sleeve and goes to I don't know where. I have the new harness from BFY parts and there is no wire with that color combo and there is no harness for the diagnostic plug which leads me to beleive it goes up to the diagnostic plug. You may want to check the following web site which has color coded diagrams. Its: www.vintagebus.com/wiring/. It has COLOR wiring diagrams of Beetles, Busses, and Ghias. Hope this all helps.
