Firewall

Hi,

my 74 Ghia has an improvised firewall. It works , but as I'm revamping the engine I would like something that looks better. I have tried to find firewalls for it but have been so far unsucessfull.

Do you guys know of a place that would have it?

Are you referring to the actual sheetmetal panel between the rear seat area and the engine or just the sound-deadening panel that's attached to it?

There are aftermarket metal panels available; I'm not a fan, particularly of the louvered ones which will slice your hands like a big cheesegrater any time you're taking the engine in or out. Reproductions of the original tarboards come in a range of price (and quality)...couple examples below, you'll need to carve out a hole for the diagnostic plug if you're keeping it (some panels come with a perforated knockout for it). Whatever you choose, take care to ensure that it's firmly attached to the firewall so it won't get sucked into the cooling fan. Especially a concern with the lighter/cheaper ones, those really need to be glued in place IMO

Once upon a time, i was on a long trip in one of my bugs. All of a sudden, all holy hell broke loose with severe vibration and a squealing noise that was coupled to engine speed.
Coasted to a stop along the interstate in TN and after a moment, figured out that a peice of the tarboard had sucked into the fan. Fortunately no permanent damage, dug out the peices, engine ran normally, drive continued.

So. The moral is, just like written above, make sure whatever you install is in good shape and well secured.
