Gaz level solution
Guys,
My 74 Ghia has the gas level on the right gage (A clock).
Two things:
1st, it never worked, it goes from full to empty in one shot. I never bother fixing it.
2nd, I just purchased a set of speedometer/tachometer for a 914 Porsche. It doesn't have a gas level lever anyway on those gauges.
I would like to eventually have the ability to have a gas level lever; Any thoughts?

Re: Gaz level solution
do what I did, get a super beetle speedo. it has all the lights and the gas gauge. you will need a new speedo cable but those are cheap and easy to replace.

Re: Gaz level solution
Thanks!
I'm weighing my options, I liked your solution. But the size difference between the super beetle speedo and the 914 tach bothers me a little. What kind of speedo cable will I need in this case? A super beetle speedo cable?
I noticed that you used a regular beetle's first. Did you switch to the superbeetle's because it was broken or because the solution didn't work? Don't they have the same size as the 914's tach? would it also need new speedo cable? What year / model speedo should I use.
Isn't there such a thing as a stand-alone gaz level? I will have an instrument cluster in the middle, below the dashboard...
Sorry for the many questions...

Another option for you would be to use the 70\71 ghia fuel gauge. 52mm round single gauge all by itself.

Re: Gaz level solution
The 70/71 had one large hole for the speedo in the center with one small hole on each side of it. One is for gas gauge (left side) and one for the clock (right side).
I replaced my non functioning clock with a 52mm vdo tachometer from a volvo.
Anywho. I do not know whether the sending unit you have would be compatible with the 70/71. A check of the parts sites to see if the 74 and 70/71 sending units are the same pn would tell you that.
If they are not, you would need to find a sending unit to match the gauge you are using..
The gasket is the same, IIRC, so there should not be any issue installing the sending unit itself, and the wiring on the 70/71 is stupid simple, unlike the whole vibrator type system.

Thanks helowrench,
Is this the sending unit for the 71 ghia? http://www.jbugs.com/product/98-2021.html

Re: Gaz level solution
The hole in the dash is too big for the older bug speedo. it was just sitting in there until I got a better fit. yes, the trim ring on the super speedo is bigger but I don't mind. I used an ATP Y-888 speedo cable I got on amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C8 ... uctDetails I think I just looked up a cable for a pre-74 ghia that uses the standard threaded end not the funky twist end.lcvaldetaro wrote:Thanks!

That's it. Hmmm pop the screws out and pull yours out of the tank and see if that is what you have already.lcvaldetaro wrote:This one? http://www.karmannghia.com/viewDetail.a ... oduct=4768
