New guy, new Engine

Post by samotorsport »

Hey guys I am new on this board, I am Sam from Luxembourg and planning and building an Oxyboxer on am MV enginecase base.
The purpose of this engine is the 1/4 mile, no more street usage at all.
I hope to get more Infos about you guys for my buildup.
As I said , the base is a MV crankcase, first step is going to be to disassemble the engine and machine the watercase off.
And there it starts:
As far as I know, type 1 crankshafts are Fitting right in without mod , is this correct?
What is the biggest stroke I can put in without modifing the casing?
What aircooled cylinders are you using ? Is Mahle a good choice?
If this is all Setup I still do not know if I should go with double Webers 48 IDA or maybe turbocharging the beast .....
Does anybody has experience turbocharging a Oxybober (maybe a lowbugget kit)
Any comments or maybe buildup threads for dragster engines are welcome.
Thanks in advance
Best regards
Sam

Getting closer, I gonna go for a forged scat type 1 crank with Mahle cylinders and Pistons, 94x82 = 2276ccm
The conrods most probably scat , CB "H" Beams
I still have a K03-045 Turbocharger at home, this Comes from a VW 1,8T , do you think it can handle 476ccm more.
Standard boost is around 0,6 bar (8,7 psi) with +/- standart heads and an original camshaft.
What compression Ratio do you think would be good for this Setup? 9/1 ?
Best regards

I for once would not use such a small turbo as it will probably build to much backpressure = heat that stays in the engine = bad for all engines and especially aircooled ones.

I would go for a turbo with bigger exhaust side for less backpressure. TD04HL series are dirt cheap here in sweden anyways and they are fast-spooling and with 19t compressorhousing you are looking at a solid 250-300 horsepower easily.

How about engine management ? full sequential ignition and injection ?

Thanks for the advice, I didn t think about that, I was scared more about low spooling with a bigger turbocharger.

Injection I though about MS v3 ore maybe Vems , not 100% sure yet, I am in contact with a guy who will tune it up and teach me how to do this stuff, I will have to check with him what he prefers.

I have limited experience with all aftermarket Engine management systems , have built 2 full working MS2v3 boxes for friends but not finished a complete install myself .

A good friend of mine Jörgen is in the development-team of VEMS and i have only good things to say about his work but......

If you want ALL bells & whistles go MAXXECU. THE most competent aftermarket ECU in production and not really that expensive.
14000 swedish kronor and that includes flying lead wiring harness, Bosch LSU 4.2 WBO-sensor and all installation thingies....

some Maxxecu specs.

Up to 8 cylinders fully sequential fuel and ignition.
Full support for Vanos/Vvt.
8 built in exhaust temp sensor amps for per cylinder temps.
400Kpa MAP-sensor.
Both high and low Ohm Injector compatible out of the box.
Wideband O2 sensor driver.
Advanced security and warningfunctions.
Configurable by USB / Bluetooth
Android app for realtimedata over bluetooth.
CAN module for alot more analog and digital in/outputs.
CAN module for PWM regulation of pumps/fans.

I build myself from scratch a megasquirt unit.
I think the price is Awesome and the capabilities unlimited.
Diyautotune.com shipped it my unit to Greece in 3 days.

Btw the 1.8t turbo is already small . It is meant to spool from 1750rpm on the 150 bhp version, 2250 for the 180... Etc.
My welding sucks .

I would have WBX crank stroked (DPR) to 82mm buy the 200mm T-4 style flywheel ( You can have it wedge mated also) to keep the 2.1 style thrust shim set up if I were doing what you want to do. Rocky

If you use the T-1 style crank you would use a .040 align bore thrust brg, but that would put you back to the dark ages of a thrust built in to the #1 brg. It took VW over 40 years to figure out that their thrust brg set up was Bad! In 1986 in the Waterboxer vanagons VW got it right. I would never go back to the flawed 1 pc. thrust. Rocky
