well i can't say i've really done much on the bug lately. it's been over 100* in the garage the last couple of weekends, and i'm doing this for fun. i did get out and pull the rear fenders for the suspension rebuild, and have penetrating oil on the bolts.

here are some of the parts . i got some used 25 mm torsion bars from a 924, i hope they will reduce the rear end squat on hard accelleration. the torsion plates are from red 9 design in england, they are drilled so that bug is dropped 2 in with out losing suspension travel. i saw them in speedpros "how to modify vw beetle suspension brakes and chassis " i'll let you know if they work as advertised. urethane bushings too.
i also have new rear bearing and seal kits, a rear disc brake kit and whiteline 3/4" swaybar.
figuring out ride height with new bars and plates is going to be fun, i imagine i will do it three or four times. starting project next weekend. jim

Ahhhhh. New parts.

Gotta be excited to see how this works out. What do you have planned for the engine and tranny, now that you've brought eliminating squat into the equation.

Where did ya get your fiberglass fenders, and the lights?I love the look of both the headlights and the tails on those fenders. What year are they for and what year is your bug?Btw the build looks SWEEEET and thats gonna be one mean looking street car,you are gonna have to go with the big power set up or people will never let ya live it down.

hi jay,
i got the front fenders from an ad on the samba. they were unused, but sitting in a guys shed for a couple of years and he wanted to dump them, no markings for the maker. they are the early style headlight bucket, but 3 in wider. the porsche glass lenses are repros, and will fit all early buckets. rear taillights i bought on ebay, and all i remember was it was a vw parts seller in brazil.
as for the engine i'm still learning about air cooled vws. i have decided it will be a 2110, because the cylinders have the most surface area on fins. and stroker crank for cc's because i want to build for mid range torque.
trans will be built up freeway flyer. i went with the shorter rear tires on purpose, so it will accel harder out of corners, but they will kill freeway cruising. with the bus fourth gear it should bring rpms back to normal speeds for cooling and comfort. (i hope)
the car is for street fun, it will hit the 1/4 once in a while for wed nite grudge races, and i'd like to run it at a sacramento auto cross but i dont think it will fit any class , just timed run.
there are four roads around here that are miles of twists and curves end to end. la honda road to the beach, niles canyon to the valley , highway 29 to the lake , and skyline rd along the ridge tops. they are fun on a sat morning on my bike ,but its a cruiser and the floorboards grind. also fun in my firebird, but with automatic, rack and pinion, ac it just seems a little too refined. i want to feel like i'm pushing it, and that car does it to easily.
i wont get much done this weekend , i twisted my back on friday and i have to be careful just walking. maybe i can clean and rebuild the spare diagonal arms. jim

As far as AutoX goes, It would be classes as a SSM or XP car. I'd have to know the weight and the tire size to be sure if it's SSM.

mykul i guess i should find out the sactioning body for th auto-x and try to pick up the rule book. i'm really not building it for that, but i've gone to it twice as a passanger in a friends 912 targa ,and it was alot of fun. as to tire sizes, i'm running 195/50 15 toyos on 15x6 rims up front, and 225/50 15's on 15x7 rims in back. weight is still an unknown, besides the glass fenders, hood, and deck lid, and stripping the interior, ive still got to install...

You're probbaly too light for SSM, but I'd check it anyway. I got mine weighed at the land fill, but I messed up my front apron to do it. I'm gonna pay a truck scale next time.
