yesterday i dismantled a rebuilt engine to rebuild it again.
it looked ad first an early case of 66-67, with small galleries, single relief, small oil pickup, 10mm studs, no deep stud and so on.
then once removed the cylinders, i noticed 2BR casting script on the sides. no evidence of As41 or As21 script everywhere.
what is this case for?
early or late case?

Re: early or late case?
no, it was a blank case, punched with "B" but by the previous builder probably a factory replacement case. i' ve seen some other cases also "blank" but was punched with a PU vertical where normally was present the VW symbol before the engine letter model. but these other were normal recent cases. (case savers, dual relief...)
i've some photoes on the phone. the strange thing about this case is that it has all early characteristics but appear a brazillian 90s case (vw-audi symbols casting and 2BR)

Re: early or late case?
OEM German cases marked "B" would be 1600SP and to the best of my knowledge none predated the adoption of 8mm oil pump studs for the `68 model year. "H" (1500SP) could have either 6mm or 8mm pump studs depending upon year of production.
Hard to say how Brazilian cases of the era might have differed, but hopefully they never used the "cottage-cheese" alloy found in the US-market H5/B5s of 1968 & 1969 (all of those had 8mm oil pump studs).
You say this case has many miles on it without benefit of case savers, which'd be unlikely for that alloy - so it's probably potentially sound, although I wouldn't use it for anything more than a 1500 or low-compression 1600DP.
IMO it'd be worth inserting (with sunken stud) unless this is very low-budget build (I'd probably do the one for the sunken stud as insurance even for a cheapie.)

Re: early or late case?
It's a pity the H5 /B5 cases are so bad because I am currently running one in the bug and it's not a well engine.
I have a replacement engine on the bench but it's another H code lump.
Oh well it's a good job it's a temporary fix until I get the 1955cc finished.

Re: early or late case?
engine is running again. i repaired the studs, installed the long stud, linbored the case with my early model portatool and i discovered also ther cause of overheating. mass rebuilder instlaled one 1300 head and one 1600 head. both generously flycut. i had to correct also the heads. on one side was 7.9:1 and the other 8.4:1. Re: early or late case?
Yeah, that would be bad with a stock cam - ~7.75:1 is the limit, even with good pump gas, IMO. Sounds like you've done right by it and it should live a long & happy life this time.PEPPE wrote:...on one side was 7.9:1 and the other 8.4:1. (!)

Re: early or late case?
i was only in doubt about using 1/2 inch or 14mm case savers. at last i decided for 14mm ones. should be stronger, i hope.
