can you rent a garage?

does anyone know if it's possible to rent a garage to work in? i live on the pennisula in the SF bay area, and i need to find some space to do serious work for about a month. can you rent at a self storage place and work there?

no painting, welding, powertools, or nasty chemicals are in the plan...

Most "self storage" locations won't allow working on cars. It's a fire issue with the fuel and an insurance issue.

I played in a garage band in high school we had a storage unit with electricity there were a bunch of guys who had units to fix cars.. One was a chop shop or so the rumor went..

Break out the phone book I'm sure there might be something in your area

glenn's right, most self storage places won't let you work on cars in them
- but i found the secret. if you look for a locally owned place, and
explain your situation and the nature of the work, they can be quite
accommodating. big franchise places, just say no way right off the bat.

There is a garage that you can rent in Mountain View that specializes in automotive restoration so you can work on your own car, it is located in the area between Hwy 101 and Middlefield Rd., and Shoreline Blvd. and Hwy 85.
The garage is called Dream Lot Garage - http://www.dreamlot.com

I have seen their flyers/brochures at many shops in the area, one of the owners also stopped by an announced their Dream Lot Garage at our V.V.W.C.A. - Golden Gate Chapter meeting sometime last year.

Do what I did. Just rent one out and work on it anyway. I have seen a few mexicans living in a couple of the around the house. Bottom lline they just want their money.

my warehouse has now expanded to three bays... but i don't have a lift the floors are not thick enough and the roof not high enough to accomodate a lift... but the building beside me can, so if i REALLY need a lift I can use one... my friend on the other side of the building has also made a spray booth to paint a couple cars...

I've done it a couple of times in the past but it didn't always work out to my satisfaction. Craig's list might still have a section to list short of long term rental garages but be careful, things/people have changed a lot in the last few years.

Spots like that are hard to find. I did find a self storage place that lets you run a small business out of the bay. I have my Westy in a 11'x20' w/elec. I have my compressor hooked up along with all my other stuff. However you're in Ca. and I'm in Fla.

I live in Castro Valley. I've been looking in the SF Bay area for over a year.

but I want atleast 400sqft and only want to pay about 300$ you can find 1200sqft places for about 1400$

Its really difficult.. I do know there are two garages that rent by the hour... that gets expensive real quick though!

Good luck with $300 for 400 in SF. I know it's more expensive than here. I'm paying $237 for 220 here. I found a place today, $847 for 620. It's outa my budget.

Us City dwellers have many advantages over folk from the country side, but cheap industrial premises availability isn't one of them, it's the folk near farmland that score with space and no near neighbours to complain of noise, over here in the UK, even this is under pressure from the authorities who can now search from above with Google Earth and such to see what's going on down on the farm!
