The stock Ghia sender is IIRC as you note a resistive unit and can be made work on MANY aftermarket heads.
Only one caution: You tend to get what you pay for.

Full disclosure: I'm highly biased against most off the shelf analog gauges: most any gauges I might buy at this point are going to be canbus, and actually calibrate-able, I'd rather have nothing than have to guess. I'd rather duct tape my laptop to my dash than suffer pretends-to-be-accurate instrumentation.
