Dune Buggy disc brake woes..

Post by danielzink »

Finally made the decision to get this street legal buggy on the road:

I've had it for a couple years taking up space....didn't really have a plan for it until now....

Work is currently underway for a Subaru EJ22 install (but that's another thread for the Conversion Perversions forum).

Anyhow - I scored a set of Terras for it and wanted to maybe get another set of rims to mount them on.

I started taking things apart to determine PCD and it seems I've opened up a whole new can of worms (doesn't it always happen that way ? :D

The buggy has these brakes on it:

I've determined via part numbers that the calipers are off an 87 Lincoln Mark VII or Continental

Looks like I've got a 4 x 130 PCD:

Image

So yeah....that's all the easy part...

Problem is.....

When I went to take the lug nuts off - I noticed a bit of errrrrr..."play"...in the hub...

Took out the cotter pin….removed the castle nut and found this:

Image
Image

Looks like this has been loose and chattering for a very long time…

The splines on the stub axle look “okay”:

Image

Although I am going to have to clean them up with a file as I tried to slide a brake drum on and it wouldn’t go…

I’d like to keep the setup as it also incorporates a shock mount:

Image

I guess my question is….

Has anyone seen a setup like this before ?

I’d really like to just like to clean up the splines and find new hubs to slide back onto the rotor..

If not…I suppose I could buy a new rear disc brake kit.

Don’t need a parking brake…trans is an 002..

Anyone have any suggestions ?

Thanks !

Steve,

Could you PM me with some measurements ?

I could definitely be interested.

I'll measure mine also.

Thanks !!

Yes, no problem. I need to dig them out of my storage building, probably tomorrow I can get some pics. I'm 99 percent certain that is what you have there. This was a common conversion back in the 80s and early 90s before CB and others had their hubs. (edit Most) Aftermarket are iron. VW parts are STEEL so much better. Your buggy had to run with a loose axle nut to ruin the splines like that. Almost walking...

Yup.

Thank goodness I found it before *I* ever drove it ;)

Probably part of the reason I got it so cheap.

Thanks for all the info !!

"Don’t need a parking brake…trans is an 002.."

I don't understand this. The last time I heard DOT was still requiring a manual parking brake. Maybe I haven't kept up well enough but this was the last I had heard on the subject.

Mechanical spot calipers are cheap, too.

There may be even another caliper that will bolt on that has the parking brake built in.
(In fact, the ones you have look like they may be missing the lever etc, pretty sure they come with it)

Hmmm.. those may be fronts.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

<shrug>

dunno.....

Bought it in Ohio.....

trailered it into Michigan.

Sent the title work to the state....

They sent me back a Michigan title....

Buggy doesn't have an emergency brake now....

Never will.....

if it is streetable then check with your state to see if it is necessary but I also think it is a DOT thing. Where I live it is. I got a faulty equipment ticket once during a stop to check on the status of my car (I pointed out that I wasn't the same owner and the tank was not in the car anymore). I got the ticket to fix it and a lecture on the law that covered this (the officer had a new recruit riding with him so he was training both of us at the same time).

Also, be aware that if you have an accident and no ebrake is discovered and noted then your insurance could use it as a reason to not stand by you or even drop you. Seen it done several times.

I didn't mean to scare you to "yikes" but be aware as it can be a fact. There are a couple of insurance companies out there that have a rep for doing just that. Its been a long time since I have seen any facts on just which ones are prone to it but I doubt if some of them change much.

Lee

I did a quick search and found this on the first page but I am pretty sure it is incomplete.

Every day I strive to learn something new....just like the old adage goes....

Today ?

I learned (2) things - so it's a bonus day <LOL>

First....I learned that yes - an assembled title vehicle in Michigan does require a parking brake...(Michigan form TR-54)...

Second....I learned that I do have a parking brake !

Image

Whether it works or not remains to be seen when I get everything back together....

I had never given two thoughts to what the thing was....

Thanks again, Dan

Next is identifying these rotors....

They appear to be dual pattern 4 or 5 lug.

Vented....

No part numbers anywhere. I've wire brushed them...magnifying glass'd 'em...can't find a thing.

They look to be in decent shape...it's just that at some point I'll need to replace them...

Dan, check again to see if the word "mechanical" is there when describing the ebrake. What you have is the notorious ebrake I had that has a penchant to either jam locked or leak and let loose.

Interesting that no part numbers or max cleanup dimensions appear.

Looks like you are doing a good job and thinking ahead.

Come to think of it.....

I've got DB & HVw's/ VW trends/ etc. back through the early 80's.....

Maybe later I'll leaf through a few of them and see if I can find any ads that may make refernce to these kits.....
