Deves are nice (lots of ring tension; the cylinderwalls wear faster and they take a bit to break in, but they last "forever" once they do).
Or here's a set of cheapies for $20: http://www.importautoberdoo.com/vw-audi ... rings.html

Found some Grants at a local import part place. The only issue is with the pn from Grants catalog, their system shows them as 90.5mm, I guess we'll see what they are tomorrow. I'll take a cylinder with me to check them with.

Re: need a good used 90mm cylinder
That's a common point of confusion since many replacement rings for "big-bore" pistons are stocked under the P/N of the original-size ring set for the engine, followed by the nominal bore size (i.e. 311 198 169/88 denotes rings for 88mm pistons intended for use on a 1600). Problem comes when making the distinction between close sizes such as 90 and 90.5, most likely because the inventory-control software can't handle enough digits - but even when it can, if the individual responsible for the initial data entry is unaware of the existence of one size he may assign the number which should rightfully go to it to another size that's close.
Then there's the matter of the ring thicknesses - it's not at all uncommon for there to be two or more options for a given bore - so that numbering scheme is just a bad idea from the start.
That GT1484 Grant number (and ring widths) I gave you earlier was from memory -our shop used to campaign an offroad rail with a 90x82 motor that used ISS pistons. It's been about thirty years so don't hold me to it, I don't see that number in their current catalog...if they do make some under a different number please let me know what you find, I've still got an N.O.S. set of ISS 90Bs around here somewhere which I may need rings for someday.

The "new" numbers in their catalog are; P1484 for the normal rings and C1484 for the set with a chrome top ring.

Thanks, that'll be easy for me to remember. I'll bet 1484 was the number back in the day too, and our jobber appended the "GT" prefix that I'm recalling just to denote Grant in their system.

They turned out to be correct. Now to wait for the heads to come back from getting flycut and start the mock up for determining deck height for desired CR. And sooo many other things to do.

Probably, I'm not great with names, somebody he trusts at any rate.
