Subaru 5MT gearbox fitted into type 1 VW pan. Subaru gearbox fitted with reversed ring and pinion to allow fitting in rear engined cars.
More info at http://www.subarugears.com

Standard OEM gears vs reversed gears

Relief on opposite side housing to clear ring gear bolts

Box in type 1 pan with EJ20 engine block

Shifter location, just to the right of original VW shifter

Upside down, showing clearances and engine height increase vs VW box

Mount mock up. Decent triangulated engine mount needs to be made

Close-up of gearbox mount, sandwiched between 2 x poly suspension mounts

Better late than never.
The tranny I'm using is a ZF 4 DS-18 (Renault truck 4 speed that aparently started life in the BMW M1). Gear ratios are a bit short even with 31" rubber. It fits without cutting torsions, and a kombi bell housing adapted relatively easily by making an adapter plate.

Thanks Henry. I must have been going too fast and missed it.
