Static vs Dynamic CR vs boost

Post by Dive!Dive! »

Hi
Thinking about adding a turbo...
I have a 1776 with full sequential EFI through ITB's , makes about 130 at the flywheel. In a full weight beetle.
I have a static compression ratio of 9.5 and a dynamic CR of 7.4.
In the UK so 98/99 octane gas is readily available.
I don't really want to split the engine down if I don't have to as it runs nice and is dry :-)
What's the maximum boost I could consider, keeping things reasonably safe ? I was thinking 7-8 psi ?
Any advice/thoughts appreciated!
Cheers

That's good , especially if you cool the charge  (Intercooler)

Just curious, you are making 130 what at the flywheel? I have a turboed/FI 1776 in my offroad buggy and might be making 100hp on a good day with 8lbs of boost. I am very interested to hear the specs on your motor, I have so much to learn.
Thanks

Or 24 PSI with pump E85(really E85, not E70, about the best I've found), or 30+ if you blend your own with 110+ race gas and ethanol...Assuming your heads stay on, and trans doesn't self destruct.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

My 9.1:1 static engine made 27.8psi a week ago on the strip with pump e85, when the line to my wastegate blew off! Took it pretty well. Now that I know it can do it, I fully plan to make it do it again

woodsbuggy1 :
Its built around an aluminium case and a c/w crank. Cam is a Bugpack 4062-10, 1.25 rockers, 044heads 40*35.5 but ported - the inlets flow 163cfm @25" H20 at 0.5inch lift. 9.5 CR , 1.5" custom exhaust.
EFI through IDF pattern twin ITB's 38mm butterflys - i.e one choke / butterfly per cylinder
It all goes together quite well....but the heads make the real difference. 130 bhp at the flywheel. Its under camed really...that's my other option, split the case , put in a JPM cam, a tad more CR and I reckon a true 150+ is achievable.
I've been working on this motor for a while - it made 100 at the flywheel with home ported std 1300 heads and twin DRLA40's....then 115-120 with 044's and the DRLA's (less porting)

Steve,
Thanks for sharing your build specs, very impressive. My 1776 has a C/W crank(wouldnt build a motor without one) but stock unported heads and an Engle W100 cam so it is no comparison to yours. Once I am at 2500RPM or above(on boost) I can easily keep up with my buddies that are running 2276 and larger engines but we are offroad where torque is king. I am sure you could add a turbo and intercooler to your setup and be very impressed at 8lbs of boost. I am currently working on a 2276 NA to provide more low end torque but boost is very addictive, be warned :D .
