BAJA-IT runs again

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

I think it is time for a Title change.

Chip, that is the plan. I just have some carb issues I have to fix.

The plug on the left is from #2 and the one on the right is from #3. Looks way rich on the 3/4 side. I have a single Zenith 32ndix on the engine, both barrels of the carb are jetted the same. I wonder if this could be because of a wrong float level? I do have another Zenith carb I am going to try.

Have you considered changing the heat range too? Are both plugs firing all the time? The reason I ask is the porceline on one is clean and the other one is dirty. I agree you might need to rejet or clean up the carb but the color difference has me questioning.

Do both plugs on either side look similar to each other? Why run the single instead of duals? Race class restrictions?

Have not pulled to other two plugs yet, but it was that way when I pulled it apart to change the bad case. I checked for vac leaks on the 1/2 side but didn't find any thing.
This is just a play car and I have had the zenith on it sense I built it. Use to run rich so I changed jets and venture size when I rebuilt the engine a few years ago. The other carb belongs to my son, I'll see how it works tonight.

The Zenith 32NDIX mounted as a single carb won more offroad races overall than any other carb or intake setup, mostly on 2180cc (92 bore x 82 stroke) with mild to stock dual port heads. Sand duners and drag racers like more carbs for their WOT blasts where high HP is required. But for general purpose offroad use, that single Zenith is still an excellent choice.

I looked back a ways, but didn't find a clear picture of the intake manifold. Does yours have fully separate runners, blended runners, or a plenum under the carb?

Cameron, I have tons of Zenith parts, jets, even intakes. Let me know if you need anything.

Dusty, the intake is an isolated runner type manifold.

I went back through the carb and changed some jets and the vents back to what I had before, drove the Baja to work again today and it seem to still run good. The changes to the carb were because it was running a little on the rich side, mind you this was twenty plus years ago before the rebuild and over hall. I did clean all the plugs and will pull them again to see how this set up is working, but I ran it this way for ten years with no problems.

Kyle if I need any thing I will let you know, thanx.

If you have a plenum or another balancing system in the manifold, they should be pretty much the same. With an independent runner intake, you can get jetting differences between left and right. But that much difference suggests something else is wrong.

Had a great time going to the Grand Canyon, the Baja made the trip with just a couple of small issues. The oil filter decided it didn't want to seal any longer on day one. We removed it, pulled the seal, cleaned it and flipped it over. It never did stop leaking but it wasn't as bad as it was. I now have a oil mess to clean up.

I also had a fuel pick up issue on the start of day 3 leaving the Grand Canyon, seems something clogged the pick up in the tank. After doing some checking and closing and opening the valve at the tank fuel was flowing again. Ran great the rest of the trip.
