Getrdone's GETR181

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Man, what a cursed run for me. First the oil seal, then a burned up connector that blew my ignition, acted up again, fixed last minute, make it out to start the run. Get a call from alarm company when I'm the middle of nowhere. Alarm is false, won't reset, race back to camp, race home. 4 hrs later, alarm poop off and drinking much deserved beer! Crap, what totally messed up week. The alarm was going off for four hours!!!! Still don't know why. Need a back up plan for when out of town. Car ran good though!

The "issues" we're all in the shop before heading out. Gonna hit up Dakar!
They would destroy the body and fenders if used of highway. These are for keeping the po po happy and hopefully from pulling me over. It's the "I'm trying" look.
They come off really quick with two nuts on the trading arm shock bolts.

Got to love Ca and it's ability to protect the population from itself. Looks good in a mud flap fender sort of way. Volvo, nice! :D

Maybe, but I've been pulled over once with a threat of VIN verification. Only my smooth talking and pointing out all the proper VIN tags did I get him to admit he was wrong. An officer admitting he was wrong is quite the miracle. The flaps are an easy, highly visual deterrent for being pulled over in the first place. Especially something that take less than 5 min to remove.
I'm gonna post a good pic of me at the desert this weekend...........cause not so good are sure to follow by others. Let's just say, it's not good to be indecisive in sand on a big ass hill. I've been stuck twice now. Which is a miracle. But when I do....I do it good!!!!
Oh, and just a little more body work now because of it.

I too have been pulled over for fenders on a Baja Bug too high. Kept on the side of the road for over 45 minutes while the Highway Patrol officer kept trying to find SOMETHING he could write me a ticket for. He failed on the fender ticket when I demonstrated with a measuring tape that the fenders on HIS Patrol Car were higher in relation to the tire than mine were. He didn't find anything else either.

OTOH, just because you get away with a technical violation one day does not mean you can get away with it the next day. I understand officials in the land of OZ can "get right up inside your knickers" about fenders and such. And THEY get FAR more technical about things that US officials pay no attention or regulations to. There have been threads on here and on TOS about such regulatory issues. Cops across this country may make allowances for obvious out-of-state travelers whose vehicle may just fit the law in their home state as far as the officer knows. Vehicle regulations vary rather widely across this country. My brother in law from Perth tells me Aussie vehicle regulations vary between the states of Oz.

Since some of the special interest group/businesses have gotten to the legislators some of the rules here are now in flux. I have talked to WSP officers that, in the past, have escorted no fender/illeagal fender vehicles that have come into the state back out of the state or, if they were too far in before caught, they had to be "trucked" back out at the owners expense.

Rails, at one time, were legal then for a long time not, now it is a maybe under certain curmstances. The last I heard (last year but tomorrow I have to go and talk to them about something else and I will try to remember to ask) the final decisions hadn't been made.

It is the Side by Sides manufactures, dealers and special interest groups for them that have been making the push. The last I heard it might be on roads with an under 35 mph speed limit and not in some cities. Again, the last I heard the whole thing is still to be finalized here.

I forgot to mention that the cycle fenders under the body fenders I have seen more than a couple of times. It does keep down the water and flying objects from the tires and also helps keep the wallet full  .
