AMR500 normal operating temperature?

Post by harris »

Just wondering if anyone on here is running a AMR500 blower and could give me a rough idea of how hot the casing should get. Can't find much info at all online about blower case temperatures. :? Guessing they run hot considering casing is finned aluminium.

I don't have an AMR but it is near identical size, capacity and construction to the 1950's MAG blower I managed to get my hands on a while back and have fitted to my vw trike.

No experience of blowers at all so nothing to gauge against as such. Kind of figuring it out as I go along in much the same way as my previous blow through turbo bike build. Being on a small scottish island I don't have many supercharged vehicles around to look at. Asked a few friends who run supercharged motorcycles down south with small roots style blowers and they have basically said `damn hot after a couple of minutes running`. I'm running in draw through configuration at 2:1 gearing (3.5psi on gauge) and blower casing is out in the breeze. Trike isn't finished and legal yet so can't get out for a longer run to see how hot it runs with proper airflow over it. Just running in the shed for a few minutes at a time as don;t want to overheat the aircooled motor. Gets hot to touch. No way of measuring it but similar to a motorcycle side engine casing after a run. Can put palm of hand on it but uncomfortable after a couple seconds. Inlet manifolds toasty warm too due to hot airflow.

Rebuilt the blower with new bearings, etc. Zero binding and spins freely. Even when hot I can hold the crank pulley in my hands and turn the engine back n forth turning the engine, alternator and blower at the same time between compression strokes. No binding anywhere, belt is loose as toothed cog/belt setup (no slipping obviously).

I wouldn't be too worried... rootes blowers are famous for a bit of heat. Once your driving it'll be a bit cooler. And it's better than a vane style blower. The friction makes them so hot you can't touch em. :(

Thanks. Was just a bit worried as blowers are a bit new to me as such so an unknown quantity. Did a search through this forum and found mention of 80C at cruising and 160+C driving hard. Hot then.

Starts fine hot or cold n drives fine in the short 1/2 mile bursts I've done on a `private test track`. 8)

I had one mounted in a draw trough config with a dell 36 on top. If you got draw trough the fuel cooles the blower. Nothing to worry there.

I plan on going injection in the future and then i will use water meth injection before the blower to help it cool. Blow trough -> more heat.

Greetz!
Better to be blown than to suck!

Just been reading your thread. Very similar idea to mine which runs a dell carb too.

Short video from other night. Tightened up belts n fettled a bit more since then as had just got fat belt, etc installed after problems with flying V belts (literally). -

Mad max scoop made out of an old stainless shop shelf out of a skip and bent round the lamppost outside the shed. Blower/crank pulleys off a landrover. Hydraulic throttle out of old bike brake parts, etc. All good fun.

Body paint, leccys n upholstery to go.

It is yes. Was initial start up after new belts n pulleys, etc. Have since altered a lot of things, setup carb more and ticking over a bit lower. Tbh though the loud pipes make it sound like idling mega high when not in reality.

I have run the amr 500 in various configurations both at the street and the strip. Running it dry with fuel after the supercharger you can see temps up to 150C at the casing:)
Your best bet is to run most/all of the fuel through the supercharger to cool the intake charge. This way you will be seeing around 70C casing temps. The funny thing is that temps drop when you floor it because of the increase in fuel flow and the cooling effect. The worst for the temps is part throttle cruising and cruising downhill with no throttle.
Nice work on the trike. Setup looks ace! What is the dump valve on the side for?

Thanks for that, useful info for sure. Not had proper mileage yet to see the various effects. Short road tests wise though it drives superb. Torque everywhere in rev range and nice and smooth. Even in 4th gear up a steep hill at 20 mph it's smooth and tractable. Front end is lifting under hard throttle when never used to before. Have my front end weighted down A LOT compared to most vw trikes. Twice the front end weight tbh of most trikes. Serious amount of framework, long heavy springer forks, car battery under front seat, fuel tank, brake servo and anything else heavy moved forwards and low for handling. Can really throw it around.

The dump valve I fitted a much heavier spring and plumbs back down to the inlet manifold to act as a safety blow off valve in case of backfires. Shouldn't be needed but a `just in case` item. Did have it backfire once on startup and chirp so worth having I think.
